Johnny G. d'Artenay got his first Johnny Cash LP, Johnny Cash At San Quentin, for his 7th birthday on July 31st 1969. The song, A Boy Named Sue had a deep impact on the young Johnny G. His parents separated when he was four years old, and his Daddy off fighting in Viet Nam, gave this particular song a ring of truth in his young and impressionable imagination.
Through years and years of musical sensations and passing fads, Johnny G. remained a lifetime fan of the Man In Black, his music as well as the humanitarian attributes that exemplified his unique brand of Christianity.
In the early '90s Johnny G. had already been a gigging musician for over ten years when he and guitarist Buzz Campbell formed the award winning San Diego rockabilly trio Hot Rod Lincoln. Almost immediately folks were commenting to Johnny G. that his vocals on the bands Johnny Cash covers were exceptional compared to others they had heard.
The dream of assembling a top notch Johnny Cash Tribute Band had been with Johnny G. since those early days of HRL. From the mid Nineties right on through Johnny Cash's passing, Johnny G. has been inspired and encouraged by the American Recordings and all of the other astoundingly profound and compelling releases that have come from mind and voice of a man that was "the narrator" of American life in the last half of the 20th century. Country, Pop, and Rock n Roll music fans the world over are to this day still fascinated with the legend of Johnny Cash as was proven by the success of the Academy Award winning film "Walk The Line".
Life with its many twists and turns of fate conspired to delay the fruition of the dream of assembling a top notch Johnny Cash Tribute Band until the fall of 2005. It was in the early summer of 2005 that the expert traditional drummer, Junior Smith, joined the ranks of Johnny G's roots country band Big Rig Deluxe. Junior commented after one of the bands shows that he agreed with some enthusiastic fans who emphatically stated that they'd "...never heard a better rendition of Big River other than from Johnny Cash himself". As soon as Johnny G. shared his tribute band aspirations, Junior committed whatever time and resources he had to make the project a success. And so the two set out to form a meticulously accurate representation of the most famous and endearing Johnny Cash performances.
