In Memory of Johnny Cunningham
August 27, 1957 - December 15, 2003
Musician, composer, producer, raconteur*, and all-around great guy. A brilliant fiddle player, one of the best.
Johnny's legacy is an abundance of music ranging from fast & furious to light & joyous to heartbreakingly tender.
In addition to his own recordings and collaborations, he also helped many other artists to find their identities and best sounds. Johnny lives on through his music and the influence he had on the music and lives of others.
"Johnny stories" abound among his friends, and he made friends everywhere he went.
Post your "Johnny story" in the "Comments" section below!
*Journalist Earl Hitchner recalled: "About five years ago at the Turning Point in Piermont, N.Y., he and button accordionist Joe Derrane gave their only concert as a duo. Introducing Johnny, who performed first, I summarized some of his talents, including that of raconteur. When Johnny took the stage, he feigned confusion. 'Raconteur? What's that? Some sort of gardening implement?'"
We are Pepa G Lillo & Gabriel Navalón and we invite you to discover our new music project >> ETHNOS ATRAMO.
We invite you to see video of the concert that we offered last June 4 at Teatro de Rojas (Toledo, Spain) performing our concert "tr3s" on the occasion of the Opening of the Great Week of Corpus Christi.
We hope your comments and we will send you a greeting from Toledo, Pepa & Gabriel. ------------------------------- ETHNOS ATRAMO >> different kinds of world music through a prism vanguardist result of twinning between different languages, ancient tones of instruments and experimental electronic sequences. Poem 2 of 230, WalkaboutsVerse (please see my blog): WALKABOUT WITH MY PEN
Once drove an old sedan, up north, From a place in Sydney to Cairns; Then to Kuranda I went forth, By train, to look without set plans.
I browsed through the trendy market, With fresh fruits of tropical kind; Walked to the creek through lush thicket - Nature’s hand giving peace of mind.
I dined in a scenic cafe; Then, outside, as I wrote for yen, Some passing Kooris called-out: “Hey, You go walkabout with your pen.”
Request or question, I don’t know - Assured voices, elderly men. That’s now several years ago, And I’ve seen the world - with my pen.
Hope you are SURVIVING these crazy economic times! Enjoy our new video "Whiskey Tonight" and stop by our site for a FREE download of the new song. Yes, something for FREE. * * * Cheers!
I just put two songs from my new album on my profile. Would appreciate if you gave them a listen and tell me what you think. If you like them, leave a comment or you can preorder the album and become part of the booklet!
Bonjour, Que d'émotion, et que de merveilleux souvenirs à la visite de ce site! C'est patrimoine de l'humanité! Merci, et "tout le meilleur" Very friendly, Christian.
A Birthday rememberance for Johnny. Thank God you have a living legacy in the music that you gave us and faithful fans that continue to provide the outlet to hear it! Happy Birthday!
Thanks for the add. Johnny & I were at a bar in New Bedford, sharing a wee drink, shortly after his accident in Calif. when he broke his wrist in three places. He was telling me this sad sad tale of injury & brutal recovery as the waitress approached & we ordered two more Scotch rocks. "Not too much ice in mine," sez he, "I had relatives on the Titanic." Doesn't make a dent on the waitress, but as she leaves I'm choking back laughter. Then he goes Right Back into this sad sad tale. Ahh, Johnny... we miss you.
Hi and thanks for adding us. We were bowled over by Johnny Cunningham when we saw him play in Vermont just before his death. He sure could hold an audience spellbound! The Celtic Fiddle Fest played another in his memory last Tuesday night at the Old Songs concert. Very moving...Vonnie from 2 Bits
Thanks for the add. I got to know Johnny for a brief period some years ago (my band had the pleasure of opening for him once), and he was definitely a unique force of nature. Thank goodness that, even though it's no subsitute for the man himself, we have his music and our memories of him to carry.
