A native of suburban Philadelphia, PA, Johnny DeFrancesco comes from a very
musical family that had already established the DeFrancesco name in the musical community. Johnny is the son of renowned jazz organist, "Papa" John DeFrancesco.
He is the grandson of Joe DeFrancesco, the Sicilian-born musician with the uncanny
ability to quickly learn and play almost any musical instrument. One of the highlights from Joe DeFrancesco's career was the 8 years he played with Dorsey Brothers swing band. Johnny's younger brother, Joey DeFrancesco is perhaps the
greatest jazz organist of all-time.
When Johnny was ten years old, his father suggested that he use his savings to buy a guitar and he has been playing and singing ever since. By the time he was 14, he was already performing in local Philadelphia jazz clubs with his father. Only when he started listening to a variety of blues artists did he begin to pioneer his own style. His insatiable appetite for the blues was the foundation for his success in the years to come. At the age of 18, Johnny had already achieved wide recognition on the Philadelphia scene for his stellar blues vocals and guitar playing.
The inspiration behind Johnny's music is not limited to one style. He is considered a blues guitarist, but he has been influenced by many artists such as B.B. King, Jimi Hendrix and Albert Collins, as well as jazz artists Kenny Burrell, Grant Green, Wes Montgomery and George Benson, and by blues legend T-Bone Walker. All these artists played important roles in inspiring Johnny to create his own Niche in the music world.
While he was living in the San Francisco bay area for several years, Johnny continued to play blues, making a name for himself as he appeared at many famous blues venues on the West Coast. Playing with blues greats such as Duke Jethro, John Lee Hooker, Luther Tucker, Johnny Heartsman and Ike Turner, Johnny continued to hone his skills and carve out a style of music unlike any other. After a year performing in Phoenix, Johnny brought his new brand of "smokin" blues back to the East Coast and exploded onto the scene.
In August of 1996, Johnny joined the faculty at Berklee College of Music in Boston, as an assistant professor. One of his more famous students was John Mayer. He also managed to tour successfully throughout the U.S. In June of 1997, the Fender Musical Instruments Company and Guild Guitars signed Johnny to an endorsement contract for their guitars, amplifers and accessories. He has appeared in ads for Fender and Guild in Guitar Player magazine, the Fender Frontline, and the inaugural issue of the Guild Gallery.
In 2009, the Johnny DeFrancesco Power Trio released "I Saw It Comin'" on the Vectordisc label which is available at CD Baby, itunes and Amazon.com. The Power Trio has been opening concerts with guitar legends Robin Trower and Steve Morse in September and October.
