---Summer 2009 UPDATE- - -
THE NEW CD is here! "DEATH & TAXES"
It is a great mixture of Roots, Rock, Blues and jazz. It has many guest performers on it including Dean Dinning (Toad the Wet Sprocket), Nicole Gordon(singer/songwriter) and keyboard and piano extraordinaire Carl Byron and was produced and engineered by Todd Nichols(Toad the Wet Sprocket).
I played mandolin on Sarah Goff’s new CD "DIRT" - Check out the track “A little time” at www.myspace.com/sarahgoff. The CD was produced by my old friend Trace Ritter who use to play guitar in the band “Chalk Farm”
I’ve been busy writing and producing songs at my studio in North Hollywood – one of those songs “It’s you and me girl” is a country pop tune (listen to it on the player above) with Mark Luna singing on it – check out his music, this guy is good. (www.myspace.com/marklunamyspacemusic)
I'll be playing with Toad the Wet Sprocket at various shows across the US in 2009. Check out their MySpace site for details.
The Johnny Hawthorn band is actively playing shows around town however most have been unplugged or shall we say "acoustic". Check the gig schedule for updates and come on out!
LISTEN TO THE TRACK "Punk in the Street" it's the NEW SINGLE and got picked for track of the day on Garage Band.com!
Also it won the following awards:
Best Male Vocals in Blues Rock, Best Production in Blues Rock,
Best Lyrics in Blues Rock, Best Melody in Blues Rock,
Best Melody in Blues Rock, Best Beat in Blues Rock,
Most Original in Blues Rock, Feel Good Track in Blues Rock
The new Johnny Hawthorn Band "Death & Taxes"CD released this year features nine songs with a classic cover of "In my time of dying". The CD breaks out with the melodic rock anthem "Punk in the street" with its catchy chorus and layered harmonies. Other tracks stylistcally jump around offering the listener a flavor of blues (Cold hearted woman), and the distored vocal and harmonica title track "Death & Taxes". The result is a sonically diverse CD. Produced by Todd Nichols (Toad the Wet Sprocket), the CD perfectly captures the "live" intensity of the band's live show.
"Once again Johnny Hawthorn serves up another plate of good ol' americana blues. No tricks, no surprises, just the blues and plenty of it." Rock is life
An impressive follow-up to his debut, self-titled effort, Death & Taxes should bring Johnny Hawthorn some well-earned accolades, if there’s any justice in the world. Blues bites
"Death & Taxes" is a very varied album and shows that this guitarist from Los Angeles is once and for all on the map. Rootstime
The "Death & Taxes" CD has been called a guitar pickers dream, as it includes electric & acoustic guitar, lapsteel guitar and mandolin. Hawthorn has product endorsements by Framus guitars/amps, Dana B. Goods Music Products and FOXX Pedals and has taught guitar at the world renowned National Guitar Workshop.
Originally from Philadelphia PA, Hawthorn came to Los Angeles to attend Musicians Institute in Hollywood, CA, and upon graduation became a hired gun guitar player in the LA music scene. He has performed with and/or recorded for many artists including Toad the Wet Sprocket, Larry Bagby, Debby Holiday, Michael Duff, Shane Alexander, Nicole Gordon, Wood Fowler, and Grant Langston to name a few.
During a trip to New Orleans, Hawthorn had a musical spiritual awakening. The history of music is so strong there and I felt I couldnt stand by and watch it go by as a sideman anymore. I wanted to be a part of that history! Back in Los Angeles I put the call out to Todd Nichols to assist in the production. Within three weeks the CD was recorded, mixed and mastered. Todd and I produced this CD all in house, without any outside help from record labels or and fancy recording studios.
The band has performed all over the Los Angeles, Southern California area, the Pacific Northwest and performed at the 2007 NAMM Show with legendary Los Lobos and Twisted Sister at the House of Blues in Anaheim, CA. The Johnny Hawthorn Band CD is available all over the web!
