Melbourne-based Johnny Saw Horses is an ongoing partnership between Jess Pinney and James Rushford. They formed in 2003 and have since been constantly rehearsing, playing, performing, drinking, sleeping, and entering a state of psychosis afterwards. Pinney also performs solo under the moniker, JUAREZ, and Rushford is a composer who also plays in a variety of avant-classical-improv ensembles, including the Sophie Brous Band, Reindeer and Parchment, and Golden Fur.
Johnny Saw Horses recently launched their first LP, "Juarez", and are currently on hiatus due to trans-pacific studies. "Juarez" is named after Ciudad Juarez, Mexico and is conceptually based upon the many unsolved murders and abusive crimes against women in this city and Chihuahua. Dubbed 'Las Muertas', there has been no resolution to date of how so many of these crimes can have occured and continue to occur.
The band brings together their vast musical interests, producing something more fluid to placate their epic country-rock/folk/pop/noise hearts. The album 'Juarez' expands the group's usual sensibilities, with contributions from Ned Collette, Joe Talia, Neil Sweeney and Marco Fusinato, alongside a DIY-choir of local heroes.
Their releases so far: Old Demo (2004) Tie the Legless Bitch to the Mast (2005 - 21 tracks, limited run with hand made individual art work for each disk) New Demo (2005) Autumn Tailgated My Daughter (2006 - 6 tracks, 1 secret, limited run of 25, individual 'surprises' in each disk) Mujer Muerta EP (2007 - 6 tracks with artwork from Brigit Ryan and photography by Veronica Carrasco) Autumn Tailgated My Daughter (reissued on Paeoniflorum Records with new artwork by Sophie Penrose) Juarez (2008 - with panoramic artwork by Brigit Ryan.
