Trombone-wise, I like players with a big, beefy sound and a hard sense of swing: Fred Wesley, Curtis Fuller, Al Grey, J.J. Johnson, Trummy Young, Wayne Henderson, etc. Props to James Pankow and Bones Malone for giving me my first taste of rock trombone.
Other influences and favorites: Stevie Wonder, Parliament/Funkadelic, Jimi Hendrix, John Coltrane, Miles Davis, Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Count Basie, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, Cannonball Adderley, Charles Mingus, Freddie Hubbard, Dexter Gordon, Art Blakey and the Jazz Messengers, etc. ......
Sounds Like
Chicago's foremost Fred Wesley impersonator! Or so I am told.
Hi, I'm John Janowiak, affectionately known as Johnny Showtime by my friends and fans. I live in Chicago and play trombone in several bands... notably the soul-jazz group I lead, Soulio. Check out the sounds at the Soulio myspace page or buy our CD right here, if you like:
Other bands that actively keep my beeper ringing are the Larry King Orchestra, Tributosaurus, Skip Towne & the Greyhounds, Barnacle Souffle and the Gina Knight Orchestra. In recent years, I've also performed with and/or recorded with such artists as blues/funk legend Lucky Peterson (European tour, summer 2006), Deitra Farr, Nicholas Barron, Ike Reilly, the Powers That Be/FM Radio, The Hush Sound, Brother John, Steve Butler & Ron Haynes, Little Hercules, Brother Brother, Ladies of the Canyon, the Associates, Jesse de la Pena, Professor John, Bumpus, Lubriphonic, the BS Brass Band, the Brass Tracks Big Band and many others.
My claim to fame, of course, is having played for eight years in Liquid Soul (1995-2003). I recorded on three of their albums, including the Grammy-nominated "Here's the Deal," and toured with the band all over North America, plus gigs in Japan and Europe.
Above: Black Nile solo with Soulio. Below: Liquid Soul on the day our Grammy nomination was announced. In answer to a frequent question, No, I don't play in Liquid Soul anymore. Not since January of 2003.
cheers man....ditto! Some nice full-boned sound action goin on that page of yours! Glad you like it.....it's like a game of spot-the-bone ay? Peace. Greivsy via NeWt
