I'm a native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama who fell out of med school playing in a R&B band. At first the weekend gigs were to pay for med school but med school took a backseat when my band, The Rubber Band, started touring constantly behind regional hit records. One of those you may remember was "Let Love Come Between Us" that was later recorded by James and Bobby Purify and went to the top of the national charts. The chance to slide out to L.A. on the heels of my old mates, Gregg and Duane Allman, and do music full time came around and I was fortunate to have made the most of it. Having some experience and success as a singer and songwriter eventually led me through several successful groups. I formed the group "Feather" with some pals who wound up being the rhythm section for Loggins and Messina. The song we had some success with was called "Friends".
Eventually I joined with my now-long-time collaborator Ed Sanford with whom we formed the Sanford-Townsend Band. Together we scored the self-penned smash, "Smoke From A Distant Fire" and toured the world. Later on, in the mid 90s I would reunite with my long time friend Gregg Allman and tour as part of his band. During my time with Gregg, I cemented a relationship with my long time favorite guitar player, Danny Toler, and his drummer brother Frankie. I've played in three bands since then with Danny. Those are: The Toler/Townsend Band, The Renegades of Southern Rock and currently, The TGZ Band.
Danny and I have written some pretty cool songs. Three of which you'll find on the player near the top of this page. Please check out "Lonliness", "Sorry's Not Enough" and "Novato Moon" and let me know what you think by clicking the "comment" link next to each song and entering, well...... your comments.
Enjoy the ride and....
Peace and Love,
Johnny T.

Oh Johnny, you should have seen the boys at ACE's. They were as hot as molten lava, and that as you know is so hot. I was engrossed with Tony and Danny, Danny teaches, and Tony makes all those secret licks of Danny's come out. Taylor, Gary, and guest Chaz was there. It was like old home week but missing you. There was an interview on a radio station here, WKIX out of Punta Gorda Fla last night, Danny called me about 3 sec. before it aired, you know, Toler time. It was really a selling point for the Toler/Townsend Band CD coming out. We miss you, Frankie is doing well and getting stronger each day. He says he will be at the next gig, yeah. Love ya, Hil
