I'm influenced mostly by non-musical life events, and concoctions of any sounds I've ever heard or imagined. I wouldn't really say that all of the following are a direct influence on my own music, but it will give you an idea of what things I really enjoy listening to: Acid Mothers Temple, The Angels of Light, Art Bears, Art Ensemble of Chicago, Albert Ayler, Baby Dee, Derek Bailey, Y. Bhekhirst, Boredoms, Anthony Braxton, Captain Beefheart, Coil, Ornette Coleman, Alice Coltrane, Converge, Crass, Current 93, Eric Dolphy, The Fall, Fantômas, Morton Feldman, Michael Finnissy, Fred Frith, Fushitsusha, Diamanda Galás, Jimmy Giuffre, Bob Graettinger, Milford Graves, Ground-Zero, PJ Harvey, The Homosexuals, Jerry Hunt, CHARLES IVES, Jandek, Kayo Dot, György Ligeti, Merzbow, Ennio Morricone, Mr. Bungle, Naked City, Sainkho Namtchylak, Conlon Nancarrow, Nurse With Wound, Evan Parker, Harry Partch, The Residents, Ruins, Frederic Rzewski, Giacinto Scelsi, Alfred Schnittke, The Shaggs, Silver Apples, Wadada Leo Smith, Sonic Youth, Igor Stravinsky, Sun Ra, Swans, Toru Takemitsu, Art Tatum, Cecil Taylor, This Heat, Throbbing Gristle, Time of Orchids, Lennie Tristano, Edgard Varèse, Anton Webern, Iannis Xenakis, Otomo Yoshihide, Frank Zappa, John Zorn.
I'm a concert pianist, multi-instrumentalist and composer who likes to rummage and get his hands dirty within all possible sound worlds. My musical journey has been a wide & varied one - from reams of concert performances of contemporary classical works to collaborations & performances with the likes of Mark E. Smith (The Fall), Damo Suzuki (Can), Adem, Barb Jungr, Elysian Quartet, Viv Corringham, Steve Noble, Luke Daniels, Alec Dankworth, Brian Abrahams, Ben Castle & Clive Carroll. I've been creating my own music since 1986 influenced by many different styles and genres - hybrids of jazz, rock, contemporary classical, improvisation, experimental soundscapes, and an ongoing diary of solo piano works. I'm presently in the process of finally making some decent recordings of works past & present. Much more to come......
Dear friends, I am playing a free gig at the beauteous Union Chapel, Islington this Saturday. The sunlight will be streaming through its vaulted windows as Blank Canvas and Arctic Circle present this gig during the blessed daylight hours of 12-2. And yea shall its hallowed interior be filled with all manner of scraping, wailing and gnashing of teeth. Let us pray. And then let us go to the pub.
Thanks for including me in your group of friends. The birthday piece is great!
When you have a moment, please come visit my main web site and download a catalogue of music I've written that includes piano. Go to johnolivermusic.com and click on MUSIC, then SCORES_MP3s. You can also listen to MP3s and see scores by clicking on titles on that page.
You may especially like the composition "...like the sea at sunrise..."
First comment! Oohhhh!
I would like to mark this historic occasion by pointing out to all viewers of this profile that John-Paul Gandy is a genius musician and without doubt one of the most sublime human beans ever invented.
Love you mate!
