Interests

  • General

My tastes are pretty eclectic, like most people, I guess.
  • Music

All kinds of classical music, from Bach to Lutoslawski and everyone in between. Pop music: mostly into '80s new wave, synth-pop, and punk ... and dance music from any era. Into old standards by the greats: Cole Porter, Rodgers & Hart, George & Ira Gershwin, Irving Berlin, Jerome Kern ... especially original period performances but also jazzy later interpretations ... my iPod is full of old standards. Not to mention movie soundtracks, Bernard Herrmann and the like ...
  • Movies

8-1/2 by Fellini is hands-down my favourite film of all time. I could watch it over and over again in an endless loop. I also love all of David Lean's films, but especially Lawrence of Arabia... Have a personal fondness for The Mystery of Rampo although other people seem to scratch their heads at why I love that film so much. Another personal favourite is The Ruling Class with Peter O'Toole. Huge fan of Hitchcock, and I think his best film of all is Vertigo but also never fail to enjoy Psycho and Rear Window over and over again ... and Frenzy is underrated. Am the only person I've ever met who loved Spielberg's A.I. but even I admit the final ending is just ridiculous ... but the overall psycho-dark mood of the film just overawed me most of the time and draws me to it like a moth to the flame ... a flawed but sort of great movie...
  • Television

Don't like much TV but enjoyed all of Twin Peaks way back when.... and old Twilight Zone and also only the original Star Trek (hate every successive generation).
  • Books

Favourite novel is Moby Dick, just the most awesome and relentless adventure of all time ... at the end, I feel like the world has come to an end ... like I haven't taken a breath in a few hours ... with finally the tiniest glimmer of hope. Some other favourtes are Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov..; The Spider's House by Paul Bowles; Myra Breckinridge by Gore Vidal; and Lord Jim by Joseph Conrad.
  • Heroes

(Writers) Gore Vidal, J.G. Ballard, Robert Silverberg, Samuel R. Delany, Connie Willis, James Purdy
