Maybe I haven't. I have listened to and played a lot of traditional English folk music and that has left its mark on my songs - their structure reflects trad formulae. I love 'trashy' poppy stuff - anything with a hook from T Rex to Daft Punk. I have no ear for jazz with the exception of Miles Davis' 'Kind of Blue' which, after a hundred listens, has paid dividends and I love it. In my CD collection, David Bowie and James Taylor seem to have grabbed most of my cash. If I ever meet either they owe me a pint. As a teenager I was really into soul and disco and I still listen to lots of that. As a guitarist the accompaniment styles of Nic Jones and Martin Carthy are just unique and brilliant. I can emulate them to some extent but they are only audible occasionally in my backing tracks. | | Type of Label | None |

| About John Poulton |
|
I have been playing the guitar both solo and as a member of a band for a long time. I started writing songs (again) three years ago. I was inspired to write following a holiday in America. I was there for a month. Even flying into New York I had a songs buzzing into my head - Art Garfunkel singing... "New York, to that tall skyline I come, flying in from London...". Walking around I found tunes, lyrics, ideas popping into my head. When I got home I did nothing but I was quickly bedridden with a back injury. Lying there I made a decision that as soon as I could sit up I'd grab my guitar and write a song. I think I had so many 'wow' experiences that I wanted to express something. Holiday photos inspired some ideas. Once I had started I found I just wanted to go on expressing what I felt about my life and experiences in song. It is a kind of 'getting it off your chest' experience; cathartic. At the end of the day, of course I'd love to make money from it, but song writing is its own reward. I don't need anyone else to like what I do - I like what I do. I do get good feedback from people who like my songs and that's great. I recommend anyone to give it a go.
