JSB BIO

JOHN DAVID SCHRADER's songs sound like....ugh..this damn question! How about "Springsteen meets the Beatles on steroids" or "a rock n roll milk shake where everyone tastes a little something from their past/present" or "a musical slice of life that everyone can take a bite from."

JOHN DAVID SCHRADER (Songwriter, Guitar, Bass, Piano, Keys, Drums) was raised in Kingston, NY… a small city about 2 hours north of New York City. His love for music started at an early age when he would dress up like Elvis Presley and put on little shows for his Mom and Dad. Upon finding an old box of 45 records in his mom's attick filled with artists like Jerry Lee Lewis, Elvis Presley, The Beatles, Chuck Berry and many others, John was hooked! He started his formal musical education in the 3rd grade when he began playing the violin. The drums followed in the 4th grade. While in High School, John started teaching him self guitar and piano while still playing drums in the school and outside of school in his band that never had a name! While earning a degree in music w/ a concentration in Composition/Performance, he added vibes, guitar, bass, piano and some woodwinds/brass to his abilities. John also earned a degree in media production w/ a concentration in Film/Audio/Video production/post-production and has worked in NYC for years in film/audio production. He now owns his own studio (JLS Sound) and recently opened his own production company (Bugbird Productions) where he scores instrumental music for film/tv. John is an active member of ASCAP and owns his own publishing company - Mahmnic Music Publishing.

John's writing began in strength upon his diagnosis of cancer. "everything I was going through and had gone through growing up needed a voice", says John. John's music reflects the pains of losing from a young age - the long climb up from what some call a dead end town - a constant struggle to "tell his story." The loss of his father at age 9 was to be the rocky start that would shape John's views on life. John also lost his beloved Mother Lorraine to Leukemia in 2006. "She was my hero...she was my best friend..she got me through my bout with cancer...It's not possible to put into words what she meant to me", says John. And that's just what he writes about - his loss - his life. His song's are his "slice-of-life." Their themes of pain, struggle, anger and yearning to "get out" yet still embracing with pride, the streets and places that shaped him are palpable.

John was 21 when he was diagnosed with aggressive testicular cancer and was given time frame of 5 years after the surgery as a gage for his survival rate. "Funny Man" came as a result of this time in John's life. That song is now featured on a benefit CD ofr cancer survivors through the organization I2Y. I2Y Founder Matthew Zachary says of John, "It's pretty common knowledge that music is a universal language that transcends time, race, religion and pretty much everything else. What isn't common is how often a musician comes along with the purest of creative instinct, the deftness of a fine craftsman, the passion of love's greatest gift and the soul-churning anguish of life-altering medical experience and harmonizes those collective influences into something truly original. It has been my distinct and humble pleasure and honor to not just be a fan of John Schrader but a personal friend as well." After John was considered "disease-free", he began slowly piecing together his own studio and trying to rebuild after his set backs. To this day, JLS Sound (Named for his Father's initials) is where everything is laid down. John is a multi-instrumentalist and usually performs all the vocals and all the instruments on all of his recordings.

John's first CD, "From Discontent", was recorded and mixed by John at JLS Sound also and from there, he went to Nevessa Productions in Woodstock, New York to master it with Chris Andersen. John shot, directed, and edited three music videos from the album. In 1990, 1992 and 1996, he was a semi-finalist Billboard and Musician Magazine's songwriting competition. John also completed a commercial for which he Directed, was Director of Photography and scored, recorded and performed the original music. The commercial, which airs on WCBS and CNBC, garnered John the Videographer Award and the Communicator Award. The piece can be streamed at Barone Media.

John had scored several soundtracks for independent films and TV/Radio commercials. John composed the musical soundtrack for a film by Director Yat-Hong Chow called "China." The film was awarded "Best Fiction Film" and "Best Original Soundtrack" at the 1997 City Visions Film Festival in New York City. John is been involved in all aspects of production for video and audio-- production, post production, etc. John also taught media production at The State University of New York at New Paltz.

THE BAND:

DENNIS STYLES (Bass) has lived in the Hudson Valley his whole life. He attended elementary school with John and shared his band mates’ love of music since an early age. He recalls listening to Herb Albert, John Coltrane, Johnny Cash and other vintage vinyl on his dad’s hifi stereo, but enjoyed a particular appreciation for artists like James Brown, Parliament, and Sly. He bought his first guitar at age 8 at a garage sale for $10, and played it mercilessly until he could play along with songs on the radio. He played guitar and bass in a number of garage bands in high school while he continued to explore the 70’s funk scene and developed a real interest in euro funk/fusion. He fell in love with the bass guitar and developed an insatiable appetite for groove laden music. He was listening to Tower of Power, EWF, KC and the Sunshine Band, and Level 42 when everyone else was listening to Lynyrd Skynyrd. He picked up a vintage Fender Jazz bass and started to teach himself funk slap technique used by Larry Graham and Mark King. Over the years, he has been influenced by other great bass players, including Stanley Clarke, Jaco Pastorius, Rocco Prestia, Marcus Miller, Bootsy Collins, and Verdine White. Fast forward to the present, and a chance encounter with John led to an audition, and he joined the band in 2010!

THE BAND: DEN STYLES holds the bottom end down on Bass. As w/ the other boys, John and Dennis go back to elementary school! Dennis has played many styles of music ranging from funk to pop! Dennis has spent a lifetime crafting his musical style...he fits in perfectly! RUPERTO IFIL (Drums)In his youth, Ruperto embarked on a path to pursue a professional career in music with legendary Avant Garde musician Arthur Rhames,. They were blessed with the opportunity to play with master Jazz musician Dizzy Gillespie, who encouraged them to "keep playing" - - and that they did. Ruperto served as Vice President and General manager at The Terrie Williams Agency in New York City, where he was privileged to work closely with high profile artists and community leaders including Eddie Murphy (during his music period), Miles Davis, Chris Rock, Mary J. Blige, Russell Simmons, Sean Combs (P-Diddy)…but the stage kept calling. In 2001 Ruperto developed a concept for an arts and entertainment complex that would produce major cultural events. Ruperto helped design, build, and develop what is now a 75,000 square foot facility housing an art gallery, a dance studio, lounge, rehearsal facilities and a performance space with a capacity for over 1,000 patrons. Ruperto has produced, promoted and/or played at events with Jack DeJohnette, David Sancious, the Duchess of Funk, Slam Allen, Bad Brains, Parliament/Funkadelic, NY Funk Alliance, The Heavy Weather Band, Flash Band, Electric Rubyfish, and now he's psyched to be riding with The John Schrader Band! DENNIS STYLES (Bass) has lived in the Hudson Valley his whole life. He attended elementary school with John and shared his band mates' love of music since an early age. He recalls listening to Herb Albert, John Coltrane, Johnny Cash and other vintage vinyl on his dad's hifi stereo, but enjoyed a particular appreciation for artists like James Brown, Parliament, and Sly. Fast forward to the present, and a chance encounter with John led to an audition, and he joined the band in 2010 ........Some of John's press..: ...... .."Definitely a VERY cool release!!" Says Lord Litter (Lord Litter Show), Germany. .... .."Nice bro!!!! Fun, foot stomping rock...play it loud!"... Rich Redmond Nashville, TN (Jason Aldean's Drummer).... .."I love your new cd, John! Your songs come straight from the heart. All I can say is rock 'n roll with heart & soul - that's John David Schrader." Domonique - WMJC FM - Long Island, NY.... .."Tell us what you really feel John David Schrader – don't sugar coat it. Daylight Crashing does just that. This man feels deeply. He wears his feeling right at the tip of his nerve endings. He wrote, produced and recorded this CD all by himself. Daylight Crashing roars out of the speakers and smacks the listeners in the face with a ream of concrete. Bitterness and anger leak out of this record like raw sewage overflowing in a rain storm. Betrayal and disbelief abound. On the opening track, "Shock", Schrader rages, "I never knew that I could soak up all the shit that you had hidden…you kept f*ing with me…stop f*ing with me…excuse me while I make a mess of me…but it's still a shock." "Dirt" hammers the emotions even harder. "I wish you knew how much I hate this…to see you bleeding…bleeding just for them…I won't hide this…I won't deny this…I'd love to see them suffer and I'll say it again." The one word titles continue with "Dangling." And so does the resentment and disappointment. "You left without a trace…I need a moment to revel in…I need to stand up straight and let this settle in…I'll have my chance to liberate…but for now I'll just dance and self-medicate." Well, dancing sounds positive…and that's just the first 3 songs!! After the paroxysm, depression follows. In "Better Than Me", the music lightens up – for a moment. "I'm stuck in this hole – I think you should know- I'm not doing so well – I need better than this – to taste one real kiss – can you embrace my hell?" Sorrow flows in a who-like ballad "77." "Please pass me the bottle – I'm going down again – same old kick in the stomach – it hurts like hell, my friend." The musicianship astounds on this record! Hooks abound! But this should come as no surprise. John started out as a drummer - just like Steven Tyler from Aerosmith and Marvin Gaye! After earning a degree in music, he added vibes, guitar, bass, piano and some woodwinds/brass to his tool kit. Schrader also earned a degree in media production and has worked in NYC for years in film/audio production. He now owns his own studio (JLS Sound) and recently opened his own production company (Bugbird Productions) where he scores instrumental music for film and television. Remember the buzz on the band Boston when they released their first album? Insiders whispered that Tom Scholz recorded the whole thing by himself in his basement studio. This has become the norm today! Why not cut out the middle man? And if you want to cut out your pain with primal scream therapy, pick up John David Schrader's "Daylight Crashing!" Roger Z- More Sugar Music Magazine.... .."John Schrader's' CD [Blood In The Wood] is a welcome surprise -- an unusual combination of strong rock grooves with smart and really cleverly written lyrics. Add to this, innovative guitar playing and pristine production sound and quality, and you've got a very promising new force on the rock scene. "....really impressive, John. I wish you much continued success." - Says Mindy Jostyn - Recording Artist (Plays/Tours w/ John Mellencamp, Billy Joel, Bon Jovi, Shania Twain, Carly Simon, Pat Benetar,Cyndi Lauper, Joe Jackson, and many more) .... ..When we were touring and doing the live thing, we received tapes and cds all the time. And everybody always wanted an opinion ...often, the material was truly awful, and sometimes (not quite as often) there was something great... Johns CD would fall into the latter category. The CD is killer! (although I'm digging the shit out of Cold), I think this disc is great. His voice is somewhere between a Pink Floyd or Don Henley perhaps...Songwriting is solid with great hooks and clean production value..not schlocky. I'm sure that his future is quite bright. Best of luck and stay in touch, John. Cheers, Dan" Says Dan Pred, The Dan Reed Network.. .. ..John,...great work! Best of luck with your art. Says John Ondrasik Five For Fighting .... .."Yo John! Nice stuff! Very nice production too! Kept the "LIVE" feel in it which aint too easy these days! Keep up the jamz dude! " Says C.P.Roth, Blessid Union of Souls .... ..This boy can play AND sing his ass off..DAMN good! Says Little Joe CookLegendary veteran of Allan Freeds rock and roll review, Dick Clarks American Bandstand and Harlems Apollo Theatre. "A supremely talented song-writer, performer and arranger." Pat Murphy, Owner The Sound Palace - Ventura County CA. .... ..I tip my hat to JohnWOW!! Rockin Rican, More Sugar Music Magazine Dec. 2000. .... ..Go read more ..reviews and press.. .... ..John has kept great musical company in recent times playing with members of The David Letterman Band, Billy Joel, Shania Twain, Matchbox 20, Indigo Girls, Macio Parker, Al Green, Southside Johnny and Leslie West, Van Morrison's Band, Muddy Waters Band, Bo Diddley, Bob Dylan, Bruce Springsteen, Jackson Browne, Johnny Winter, Peter Gabriel, Rod Stewart, Sting, Blood Sweat and Tears, Rare Earth, Little Sammy Davis (Imus in the Morning), and Miles Evans (Son of Gil Evans) to name a few. Are we droppin' names? You bet your ass!! ;-) .... ..John says, "The band I have now is, by far, the best I have ever had....these guys add such depth and dimension to my music....I love these guys! .... .. ..On Saxophone, ..Dave DeGraw... Dave has been on board with John from the start. Dave and John together have logged MANY miles of music! Dave plays Alto and Tenor Sax's and percussion and sings backing vocals in the band. Dave's ear for harmony and sax chops add a very distinct flavor to the live band! He's the big teddy bear of the group...available for hugs after each and every show! He also doubles as everyone's bodyguard! ...... ....Sean North.. is on board playing guitar and doing background vocals. Sean as with the other guys, has been playing since he was a fetus. Sean has played with many different bands in the New York area for years. Sean has a great sense of rhythm...an inate sense! Great harmony vocals make sean an integral part of the band. Sean can be spotted backstage with many notables such as Steve Vai or being MASSIVE on the woodblock for Blue Oyster Cult! Plus, he's funny as hell! .... .. ....Dennis Styles is the newest member to JSB - rounding things out on bass! Dennis has a smooth feel and great technique that breathes new life into the bottom end! Dennis has played for years in different groups before finding a new home with JSB! ....
