General
I'm interested in most things (movies, books (fiction and non), painting, some sculpture (giacometti, brancusi, rodin), music, baseball (but no other sports), cats (and to a lesser extent, dogs), parentheses (I use them a lot, because my mind wanders and I often second (or third) guess myself), and lots of other things. If you are passionate about something, chances are I know enough about it to at least talk with you about it for a little while. So maybe I'm saying your interests are my interests, and that I'm here to listen. But that's not true either. I have a lot of opinions, and if you talk to me for too long, you'll hear far too many of them.Music
Here's what's in my mp3 player right now: Richard Pryor, the Beach Boys, seven Beatles albums, 4 Radiohead albums, a 7 James Brown CDs(at least), Ohio Players Greatest Hits, 2 Asylum Street Spankers CDs and Wammo's new one, a 2-CD Parlaiment Funkadelic Set, Langhorne Slim's Electric Love, The Pages, The Resentments, Japanese Language CDs (I'm still not very good), Jonathan Richman, Taj Mahal, Led Zeppelin, Public Image, Whatever: A Best of the 90's box set (I'm on it. I'm one of the best of the 90's!), and Tit! an Opera by Dogbowl.Movies
Directors: Allen, Kubrick, Bunuel, the Coens, Jackson, Tarantino, Scorsese, Passolini, Ozu, Mizoguchi, and I'm leaving out a lot. Individual movies (other than those by directors just mentioned): Head (the Monkees film), Paper Moon (Bogdanavich), The Player, Nashville, and Short Cuts (and other of Altman's, but there are some I don't like so he's not included with the directors), oh man, this is getting tedious, I'll finish this later.Television
Holy Shit! Stop the presses! Battlestar Gallactica really is the best thing on TV. I also watch 24 and Boston Legal. Although mostly, I watch the Cardinals. My wife is from St. Louis, and we have the MLB package from Time Warner Cable, which allows us to see many of their games. I've seen at least half of the home runs that Pujols has hit. Shows I used to like that are no longer with us: Buffy, all of the Star Treks (DS9 is my favorite, though), and hmm, I know there's more than that. Shows I used to like that still are with us but that I no longer watch: West Wing, Survivor, South Park. Actually, I still watch Survivor and South Park ocaisionally, but the South Park guys are assholes.Books
Books I am in the middle of: a biography of Jackie Robinson. Books I have recently finished: a biography of Bill Wilson............... Books I haven't finished but would like to one day: Infinite Jest (and other of DFW's books--I have read half of four of them, and haven't finished any), complete works of Shakespeare (counts as one book, doesn't it?), Blockbuster (Tom Shone), The Book of J (Harold Bloom), Don Quixote, Faust, and the Inferno. ................................................... Books I am planning to finish in the next few months: A Canticle for Liebowitz (Walther M. Miller, Jr.) (because Bradford was right about Battlestar, and he insists that I read it), The Koran: A Very Short Introduction (I forget who wrote it) and Don Quixote........................................ One of the things that impedes my reading progress is the magazines and journals I subscribe to: The New York Review of Books (which comes out every two weeks and is my favorite thing in the world to read these days), Harper's (monthly; and my second favorite thing in the world to read) and The New Yorker (weekly, which is sometimes fantastic and sometimes kind of uninteresting). A couple of weeks ago I saw a guy with a copy of the latest NYR, and we started talking about the fantastic Brokeback Mountain review in it (it made the not very often point that it is, in fact, a gay love story, as opposed to a love story that happened to involve two men), and he said yes and we started talking about it and getting more and more excited and finally we ended up in a tent together. Not really.............................................This list leaves out all the books I have read and finished and am not currently reading, some of which I truly love. But I don't have time to make that list right now.Heroes
I can see why this category is here, but I think it would be misleading for me to name anyone. I have a lot of them. Or maybe I'm being lazy again and just don't want to draw up another huge list right now.

About me:
I am a poet, I guess. I haven't written much this year, but I still am often invited to perform as a poet, so I guess I still am one.................................... I am currently the vocalist and lyricist of two bands: King Missile (Dog-Fly Religion) and King Missile III. I used to be in another band called King Missile. There is no website, but the three bands are here on myspace under the name King Missile.......................................I used to be a partner in a law firm called Heraty Hall LLP. For a while I was in private practice, but these days I work as a corporate analyst at a big law firm (Sullivan & Cromwell).......................................But what about me? What kind of person am I? Well, I am 99% vegan, 98% agnostic, 97% heterosexual, and not as delicious as I used to be. I can be boring to talk to unless you can tolerate a lot of left wing political discussion...........I also like to discuss veganism, but I only do it with those who are sympathetic to the cause, or with those who seem to be proud of their carnivouressness (canivourality?).....................I am also interested in religion. I am not anti-religion, in fact, I guess it's accurate to say that I try to practice the religion known as Buddhism (although some anti-religion people like to say that Buddhism is not a religion, but a spiritual system, as if that's a meaningful distinction). Point being, I don't believe in God, but I do believe in something. I'm just not sure what...Who I'd like to meet:

Hi,

I'm happy to announce that my new album "Songs From The Films Of David Lynch" is out now.
"Truly unsettling and perplexingly brilliant... testament to both the quality of Lynch’s soundtracks and Truax’s talents" - The Skinny
"Truax is paying homage to a kindred spirit with this album. It's the best kind of tribute – affectionate and respectful, but with its own quirks and imaginative leaps and its own distinct identity." -The Scotsman
"Great stuff." -Buzz Magazine
Thanks for adding me, I am a huge fan!
For whatever this season brings in way of any meaning, let it bring warmth, joy, and love. Peace to you John!

Happy belated birthday, John!!! Hope it was nothing like any other day and everything like you would like your birthday to be, or have been... sorry for the belatedness, and the poorly-expressed sentiments, but NOT sorry that I remembered to express them eventually :)
