John began his journey into music at a very early age. It wasn't until high school where he began thinking toward combining music and ministry. College were those formative years where he cut his teeth by leading worship for many campus activities and student ministries. It wasn't long until he found himself with a full schedule, of over 170 dates a year, and leading worship for, at the time, the largest gathering of collegiate students in America. It was during this time that John released independent CDs (All Over Us, Fidelis, and The Beautiful Gathering). These CDs featured many songs written by John, that through a grassroots type of following, have found their way into many church worship services. Consume me, In You, I will obey and Beautiful Jesus, are just a few.
During this time, John was also featured on some compilation projects like Breakaway Ministries' "the Spirit moves," Grassroots Music Compilations, and Mission Compilations such as "Northgate Project," and, "Are you Airborn." It was also during this time that John partnered with an organization called World Vision. John is a spokesperson for this ministry. He believes in it so much that he and Kelly have sponsored 2 children from different countries.
In the year 2000, John and his parent ministry, Reach, formed a new discipleship ministry called, "220." This ministry began from a student retreat and quickly grew from a handful of people to now 2 winter events, mission projects and trips, 2 student discipleship camps, and 1 preteen discipleship week. What began with about 30 people has now grown by invitation only to around 800 in a few short years. People from all over the nation come together at certain times for worship, study, prayer, service, and community.
In 2003, John felt compelled to leave the road to go back to the local church. This was a difficult decision for John, as he was passionate about being on the road doing ministry, writing, leading and recording worship music, speaking on behalf of the poor for world vision, and seeing God grow 220 exponentially. John took nearly 3 years away from full time itinerate ministry to serve on the local church level. This was a good time for John to dive back into community, and lead people on a one to one level.
Today, John has come back to his first love, and original calling of itinerate ministry. He partners with many churches on a regular basis to continue communal type ministry, as well as pastors a home church which meets in his house on Monday nights.
220 is still growing by leaps and bounds, and John is writing deeper, more compelling songs of personal and corporate worship.
John releases his newest studio project, "join in the song" june 3 of 2008. He has been working with legendary producer Paul Mills, as well as newcomer Kyle Lee, to release what will quickly become a favorite of those who have followed John's ministry. This new CD will feature new songs such as God is Faithful and Everlasting Love, as well as studio versions of some older favorites that John has previously released on live CDs. Be on the lookout for John coming to your area with his band, touring the new music, and please come join in for an evening of passionate and intimate worship and ministry.
John currently enjoys life in The Woodlands TX with his beautiful wife Kelly, three little guys that are his joy, and a host of great friends and family.
