Box 418.. Sturbridge, MA 01566 ...... .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. .. ....MY BIO.... .. While growing up in Old Mystic, CT. I listened to music for hours on end. On the turntable (yes, back then we played those big black discs - this was long before cd players and MP3's were available) everything from Glen Campbell to the Bee Gees to Bluegrass music played. My family attended Bluegrass festivals when I was very young and that certainly had an influence on my musical direction. In my early 20's , after years as a listener of other people's music I began writing my own songs. I was thrilled when in 1989, singer Cathy Kreger recorded my song, "The Crow and the Strawman" which appeared on her cd Grand Central Waltz. .. In 1990, I gathered a few friends who shared my passion for original acoustic music and together we created the group Grand Junction, which would take up the better part of the next six years of my life. The group released a recording titled "Mountains and Valleys" which we released in 1994. .. When the Grand Junction trio broke off in 1996, I began performing in solo appearances at coffeehouses and bookstores. It was also during this time that I went back to college and studied Graphic Arts and Design and took some years off from performing music. Although, in 2003 I released my first CD titled "Demos and Rough Mixes" .. In 2008 I began performing music again, inspired from some very talented folks I met at the Borders Books open mic in Shrewbury, MA. .... In Oct. 2009, my song "Roaches" hit Number 1 on Bear Radio (www.BearRadio.net) top 10!.. These days, I can be seen occasionally playing at a local coffeehouse or Bookstore sometimes sharing the stage "round-robin" along with singer / songwriter Lydia Fortune and poet Jeff Cannon... .. Hope to see you out there along the way... Peace,.. John Small -
