About me:

.. .. .. ..
..

Welcome to the Jolly Green Ice Machine. Please come along on the greatest bike trip of all time and see a new way of doing things. My name is Michael Galardi and I will be biking all 48 states creating what I believe to be the longest tour of this type in America’s history rediscovering the joys that still interlace us all together. My goal through this adventure is to provide joy to those that I encounter and interact within this process. Your participation will be the only catalyst necessary to add happiness to this page. Together, we can conclude this trip with a mobile unit that maneuvers in the most eco-friendly manner achieving the same goals as the bike trip and selling shaved ice. More importantly, this trip is to bring people back outdoors. This trip is to prove that the American dream is still alive and that even though all our news sources say we are in trouble, it’s a lie and people are full of more joy than ever before. It’s time to take back the fun life is supposed to be and let loose. We all have only one time around and it’s not supposed to be that serious, so sit back, look through this page, and throw on a smile. You never know if the Jolly Green Ice Machine might be right outside your door wanting to see you happy. Thanks everyone for joining me on this life long dream and I hope it makes your day a little brighter!

ABOUT ME

I was born February 13, 1983. I lived in Atlanta most of my life. I have always been a really happy kid. I am what I like to call a product of my situation and adapt to the scene at hand. My parents say I was always active and independent. I have been camping since I was about 8 years old and have always loved the outdoors. I love life and think simplicity is the key even if it is hard to practice. An important thought during my hike through Canada was “Control nothing and nothing can control you”. If there is always a positive and negative side to any situation then why would one not focus on the positive. Our lives are shaped by our thoughts and outlooks; therefore, I am probably “unipolar” and am stuck in happiness mode. I wake up wanting to be the best I can be and know the only moment I have is now. Past mistakes don’t hold me down, but teach me balance with the world. There is a message in everything and I am inspired to learn all I can. I want to give back all that I take in and keep an open mind. I like to say “thoughts cause paralysis by analyzes” and I want to live a life of doing.

LIST OF THINGS I HAVE ACCOMPLISHED

• hiked the Appalachian Trail and the IAT 2,800 miles from Georgia to Maine through Canada (March 2006-August 2006) • biked 600 miles from Front Royal, VA to Cherokee, NC (Blue Ridge Parkway) • walked the 3-day Breast Cancer Walk and raised over $2,000 • journeyed on a Boston Whaler from Florida to Green Turtle, Bahamas • Atlanta Marathon (Thanksgiving) • Half-Marathons and Triathlon • Enjoy rock climbing, white-water rafting, karate, yoga, Tai Chi, running, hiking, cycling, and reading

BIKE RIDE

On January 1, 2009, I plan to leave Key West, Florida making my way on an epic journey around the lower 48 states, meeting and visiting with as many people and places as I can. Of course, I plan to stay in hostels and hotels from time to time, but for the majority of the trip I plan to stealth camp and rely on the kindness of others. I plan to share my trip with those that I meet and ask them to document briefly where they come from and some thoughts about how they live. I plan to work and volunteer my time to those I meet and need it not to gain anything (unless I need money) but for the relationship I will gain. I would like to try new things too and want people I meet to show me their culture and stories. During the ride and even when I am in town I plan to have a waterproof camera to record things here and there. I plan to voice record thoughts or descriptions and post them on the web with permission. I will also shoot photos along with the films. There is no way to predict what will happen on this trip for sometimes expectations lead to disappointment, but I do know I can start the trip with a positive attitude which I already possess. I will make it through and the most amazing doors will open. The people and places that will be seen will open up the imagination of others, hopefully, sparking the sense of adventure in others. Once the trip has started, I truly hope to be an ambassador and begin helping others. It is only right to give back.

THE BUS

The Jolly Green Ice Machine is a mobile eco-friendly bus unit made to live in and primarily sell shaved ice throughout festivals in the United States. This is, of course, just one of the many aspects of the company, but it should be noted as the main function of the business. The idea behind the bus is much larger. The Jolly Green Ice Machine is an experience not just a business. The shaved ice will be for children and adults. The idea is to have funky, exotic flavors and a mixed experience for everyone. As word gets out, t-shirts will also be sold. The bus will be as environmentally friendly as possible, and there will be a website following the journey through regular updates. The bus will stand for an alternate way of life. It will be a family friendly business that will bring joy to whoever may follow the experience. The idea is to travel to as many festivals as possible. What festivals to attend will be chosen based on the estimated number of people the organizers expect. The bus will most likely change its pattern regularly because of the number of festivals for exposure purposes. The idea is to become a symbol and gain popularity throughout the country. Hopefully, with time, private parties will contact the bus for private gatherings. In the end the bus will sell shaved ice, t-shirts and the website will bring in revenue. The Jolly Green Ice Machine will be a 30+ passenger bus with bottom compartments and an emergency exit with windows. The goal is to remodel the interior completely and customize it. Ultimately, the bus will have two compartments. The front of the bus will be the living area. There will be two custom fit bunk beds for the employees including a sofa and table with a small cooking area. The bus will have a speaker system throughout including waterproof speakers outside. The living area will double as the office where a wireless laptop will update the website. The second compartment will be the business, where shaved ice and t-shirts will be sold. The goal is to use the emergency exit as a window. There will need to be a large cooler that will be picked up along the travels. There will need to be a counter with a keg tap system for the flavors and an ice machine. The outside will have a fold down tarp with the logo painted on it which will rise when at a festival for hangout space. This area will be a gathering zone to keep people around and interested. Live music and entertainment will be available. There will be a tent platform on the roof of the bus for employees with road and mountain bikes. It needs to be noted that the employees will be living on this bus. A Vespa will be on the front for easy festival movement when the bus is locked at a destination. There are many concerns with the bus. Start up costs as well as creating a livable space is a challenge. This is because the bus must be fully livable along with the business of selling shaved ice. It is also a higher cost because it is an “experience” not just a business. Fueling the bus is another concern that must be researched. Should the bus remain diesel or are there other ways to power the bus that are most cost efficient in the end and eco-friendly? One idea is to add solar panels to power the bus when it is docked at a festival. Research needs to be done on ice cream trucks to see what the requirements are for clean selling.

WEBSITE
This project will be brought to the people through the MySpace page, and hopefully, sooner than later a massive website. I want to bring the issues to the table and have you help me along the way. Of course, you will be updated through video on the website. More importantly, I want your ideas, opinions, and thoughts so that you will fill in the gaps. The page will cover what I call the “Jolly Constitution” which will be any happy news found throughout the United States. The public stories will bring a smile to all. There will be an educational section with ideas about new innovative ways of teaching our kids a more open minded and global approach to education and life. Next, there is a music and art section to bring people together through the arts. I hope to find many artistic people on the adventure, but any I miss I hope you will add! I want to also report on cultural news about how people choose to live and the massive differences out there that still work for some but not all. This site is an attempt to research what make humans happy and is an attempt to shift peoples’ focus away from what is wrong and back onto what we are doing right. Please join in and help me fill this site with happiness. It is time to truly live!
