DJ Jonathan a.k.a. Thani's Blurbs |
About me:
Growing up in the 70’s in the whole disco/funk era was the foundation: everybody had something playing or a party going on in my neighborhood. Whether it was disco, funk, salsa or reggae there was always music playing and people dancing and celebrating to it. Music as expression and release first came to me while going to church. I was just amazed with the power of the band. It seemed like every time they played, they would ignite everyone in the church emotionally. There was so much power in the music and lyrics, that people would jump up and dance and sing uncontrollably and all in their ‘Sunday best.’ At that point I knew that I had to do something with music in my life. It wasn’t until the 80’s when I found I could have some of that power with DJing. I used to DJ small parties at my house after school when my mother was at work. I would stay at it for hours, not really caring about what was going on at the party. It was all about putting songs together. During this time, I got my exposure to Rock ’n’ Roll with the sounds of Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, Jimi Hendrix and so on- I was beginning to understand a much wider world of music. I first got into House, like many others I know, through a girl. It was the mid 90’s and it was at the Loft in Boston, where DJArmand Van Helden used to play along with Boston’s legend DJ Bruno. It was Bruno who gave me those first songs. I was completely taken by the atmosphere in the space. There were so many different people there just for the music. Coming from hip-hop, I was not really sure if I would like the music, but it really won me over. There was so much of almost touchable passion in the vocals and energy in the music. The feeling in the room was incredible and peaceful at the same time. This was a time when everything was electric for me. Around that time I started working in Boston nightclubs: first behind the bar, then the front door and finally the offices in the late 90’s. That was the time when it really all came together for me. I started working at a club called Lava Bar in Boston’s Kenmore Square. Every Friday night at Lava Bar there was a night called ‘LIFE.’ DJs Fran Englehardt and Paul Nickerson would play some of the deepest house music and classics from just about every genre of music that had touched them and others along the way. It was a night of musical celebration. Some of the best DJs nationwide had also come to play. I got my early lessons from watching DJs like Fran and Paul, Louie Vega, King Britt, Joe Clausell and Francois K. I was hooked. I started buying records almost everyday, quickly trying to build a collection. As soon as I had just enough records to play a short set, I went all out. Starting with opening for some of the well known DJs in town, I quickly moved on to having my own residency: 3 nights a week at 2 Boston clubs for the next 4 years. Many guest spots followed with some of Boston’s best DJs, along with a few attempts at doing my own nights. After having been in the Boston club scene for so long and being a part of various parties and events, I felt it was time for a change. I needed something more, so I packed my records and landed in Berlin. After taking some time to adjust and get a feel for my new scene, I started by handing out a few mixed CDs, which landed in the right hands. Shortly after that I was offered a DJ residency for the night Our House at a new club called Bohannon, alongside DJ/Producer Andre Lodemann. Although short-lived (8 months), the night attracted such international guest DJs and producers as Ian Pooley, Franck Roger (Reel Tone Records), Osunlade (Yoruba Records), Markus Enochson(MAW Records/ Sonar Kollektiv) and Timmy Regisford (Shelter Records, Club Shelter NYC), just to name a few, to play along with Andre and myself. My style of music is mostly deep house or as it is called out here New York deep house, along with R&B classics and dance classics.
