Jonathan's Interests
|
| General | Music is a big thing with me: making it, talking about it, picking it apart, complaining about it, listening to it. The whole deal. So much so that I'll go through periods of not wanting to think about it at all. I sing and play guitar and write songs for The Rockwells here in Knoxville. That takes up most of my time and energy. I also play French Horn in Tommy Bateman and the Thunder Thieves. Other instruments I play: drums, piano, a little bass. I'd like to learn to play the theremin, mainly because the last few bands I've seen that used one played it really, really badly. (Don't know what a theremin is? Think "Good Vibrations" or any old horror/sci fi movie from the fifties. Google it and check it out. They're great. Already knew what a theremin was? You get ten cool points. See me after class to collect your prize.)
My feelings towards music have oscillated between pride and shame pretty much as long as I've been playing. I used to have great difficulty in answering the question, "So what do you do," since I was of the opinion that most people who answered, "I sing and play guitar," were dicks. Now I'm stuck. I don't do much else than work and play music these days.
My other creative thing is writing, which is what I got my degree in. I've written short stories and a play and a couple of short screenplays. It's something I feel confident doing, but I had to make a choice between writing and music as to where I wanted to spend my time, and I chose music. Writing is one of those things you can become successful in later in life. Rock music: not so much.
I also love reading and watching movies. And there you have it. | | Music | Ahh. This is a tricky category. My brother Fred did an extensive list on The Rockwells Myspace site. Any attempt I made at listing music would just be a small sampling of what he wrote. I will say that I think about lots of different aspects of music when I listen to a CD or watch a live performance. These could be grouped into two basic categories: "What would make this better," and "How can I steal this awesome idea." Structure and lyrics and the sounds themselves and the way it's recorded (N/A for a live show, obviously), and the order songs are put in, the variation between songs or between sections of songs, the energy (or lack thereof), the intent of the music: these are all things I think about. Of course I wouldn't want to leave out Fred's seminal question: "Does this make me want to shake my ass?"
It's easy to get really caught up in older music because most of the stuff that's stuck around for thirty or forty years is the really good stuff. Modern music has to be sifted through so much it can be a pain in the ass, whereas I know I can get a Velvet Underground CD or something and know it's going to be great. I really believe in music that's being made now, though.
Oh, and I'm perfectly aware that thinking too much about music makes it difficult to sit down and enjoy an album or a show. The times when I can listen to a band and just lose myself in the moment are few and far between. It's transcendent when it happens though. Those times keep me going. | | Movies | The Andersons: Wes, P.T., that other one. Jimmy, I think. Jimmy Anderson. David Fincher's good. The last movie that really got to me was Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind. I mean, it took over my life for about a week. Just borrowed that Michel Gondry DVD and enjoyed it. I have a Stanley Kubrick collection sitting on my floor right now. Cohen brothers. Terry Gilliam. Citizen Kane. Singin' in the Rain. And, you know, anything with a nude scene in it. | | Television | HBO shows are easy to get into. Sopranos, Curb Yer Enthusiasm, Deadwood (I haven't started Six Feet Under yet, so stop asking. Seriously. I know, I know, it's supposed to be really good. I know. I just told you I know. Look. Look. Hold on a sec. Wait. What did I just say? Leave me alone about this already! Jesus!). A warning if you watch the first season of Deadwood all in a couple of days like I did: there are certain words that are cool on TV, but probably should be used in everyday conversation. A couple of "C" words come to mind. Big Simpsons fan. I don't have my TV hooked up to an antenna, so I mainly rent TV shows these days. Isn't that cosmopolitan? Or something. | | Books | Kurt Vonnegut is always a good in-between-books choice. They're quick reads, they're always high quality, and if someone asks what you're reading you get to say, "Oh, just a little Vonnegut," and if you want, you can look smug. Not that I do that. Slaughterhouse Five, Breakfast of Champions, and Bluebeard are my favorites of his, though not in that order. I like Robert Graves. I, Claudius and Claudius the God are pretty fantastic. The BBC production should have gone under the TV category, cause that's up there with anything ever broadcast. I've got it. It's thirteen hours. We'll watch it sometime. You bring the popcorn, cause I'm not huge on popcorn, and that way I can just have some of yours. I'm re-reading On the Road and am enjoying less than the first time, which is depressing. I also like some pop fiction writers. I'll give you three guesses who. Two of the three will be right. Unless you're a bad guesser. Oh, and Michael Knight, one of our local heroes. He's great. Read Dogfight, dammit. You wont regret it. |

Jonathan's Blurbs |
About me:
Well, I was born and raised in Memphis, then moved to Knoxville for school. I graduated a few years ago with an English degree and haven't cooked up the courage (or possibly the will) to leave. Most of my friends are here, and it's a comfortable place to be (personally and musically), but there is something a little sad about the transient nature of this place. I'm not referring to the massive homeless population, though that's not exactly a plus. Knoxville is a way station for most, a place to party in for a few years and then move on. I've been here six years, and the great people I met when I first got here are all but gone. Okay, this is turning a little dark, so I'm going to continue in a blog and redo this later.

Who I'd like to meet:
I'm trying to think of someone who would not only be, say, a famous person I admire, but who would also be good to sit and talk to. Hmm. Noone's coming to mind. Maybe I'll come back to this.
