| About Jonathan Lorentz |
|
Jonathan Lorentz is a saxophonist, vocalist, composer, arranger and educator, originally hailing from Vermont. His sound on tenor echoes influences of John Coltrane, Wayne Shorter and Joe Lovano and his vocal style follows the inspirations of Johnny Hartman and Chet Baker. His music combines elements of jazz, blues, and the avant-garde and is influenced by mentors George Garzone, Ralph Lalama, and Lenny Pickett.
Getting his start as a professional saxophonist in the mid-1990s, Lorentz collaborated with Mike Rossi, Joe Deleault and Jared Steer to record a set of jazz originals in 1998. This recording, released as Connect (2002), lead to a series of club gigs, New England tours, and a move to New York City.
As a New Yorker, Lorentz performed at Radio City Music Hall, CBGB's, The Bitter End, Blue Note, Smalls, and the Cutting Room. Lorentz has played with grammy-winning gospel artist Hezekiah Walker, and with jazz artists Frank Foster, Lenny Pickett, Kenyata Beasley, Matt Schulman, Drew Waters, Marcus Elliot and Nabate Isles. A quartet recording, One Night in Brooklyn (2003), features his collaborations with Gabe Jarrett, Noah Jarrett, and Johannes Wallmann.
Lorentz placed first in the New York University Jazz Trio Competition and recently toured Costa Rica with his award-winning trio. There, he performed at the Teatro Eugene O'Neil, Hotel Tirol, Ullacit University and the San Jose Jazz Cafe. His latest recording, Coming Home (2006), includes sessions with Noah Jarrett, Greg Loughman, Tim Gilmore, and Joe Deleault.
Lorentz has served on faculties at New York University, Marymount Manhattan College, Yeshiva University and in the Vermont State College system. He has also taught elementary and high school and continues to offer clinics and workshops to school communities.
Lorentz is a PhD Candidate at New York University. Currently, he is researching and writing his dissertation titled, "An Analysis of Selected Jazz Improvisations of Tenor Saxophonist George Garzone from 1995-1999." He performs regularly in Albany and Saratoga Springs, New York and tours the northeastern region.
