Jones Harvest Publishing's Interests
|
| General | | | Heroes | To Any Interested Parties -
My name is Robert Joseph Ahola. I'm an author and co-author of fourteen published books (with both traditional publishers and so-called print-on-demand publishers). I'm also a playwright of eight published and/or produced plays. I have been able to earn a considerable income as a professional writer for more than thirty years. So, I can at least say that my credentials speak for themselves.
A couple of years ago, due to some disturbing trends I saw in the traditional publishing industry, I decided to publish my books with Airleaf (originally Bookman), and I did so for several reasons.
1) Traditional publishers have become prohibitive in their chain of acceptance, and often take a year to approve a book and another two years to get it into print. What's more, they use creative rollups in accounting to deprive their authors of any realistic royalties.
2) Print-on-demand publishers, though they get books out in a marginally timely fashion, charge authors anywhere from $500 t0 $15,000 with virtually no possibility of getting in to major bookstores (due to a no return policy implicit in their contracts).
3) Airleaf (and later Jones Harvest with its coop approach to publishing) seemed to be the most solid and viable aggressive marketing alternative...and the most potentially profitable for a serious author.
And, after one early minor production glitch, I have found them to be good to their word and supportive in their successful marketing of my books to major book chains such as Barnes and Noble and Borders. This was mainly due to my relationship with Brien Jones and with good support from Bob Denton, both of whom seemed concerned about seeing my books get good exposure. And they were good to their word.
Later, in 2007, when it became apparent to me that CEO Carl Lau was taking Airleaf into what I considered a disastrous and costly detour into film (for which he had no experience), I also understood why Brien (for reasons of conscience) moved to establish his own publishing company at Jones Harvest...especially in view of the fact that Airleaf stopped sending out any royalty checks for nearly a year.
Since that time, and since switching to Jones Harvest, I have found Brien Jones and his staff to be both extremely supportive and professional in their dealings with me and toward getting my works to press. Any minor glitches I have experienced have mostly been due to their designers and vendors, and not with Jones Harvest directly. With a long history of publishing experience, I personally know enough about page-design and printing to understand that most small companies have to use outside suppliers and are often at their mercy. This is certainly the case with any startup.) These occasional production hiccups are also part of the process and certainly no cause for alarm. (I now understand that Jones Harvest is going to vertically integrate their production, which is ultimately the only sane course in publishing.)
What often amazes me is that so many authors at this end of the business come into this publishing world with badly prepared manuscripts and unrealistic expectations, and are too often unwilling to take their share of responsibility for many of the things that do go wrong. And the fact that they too often are not is, I find, both disingenuous and unprofessional.
From what I can see, and from what I have seen develop with my own properties, JonesHarvest, Author Celebrity and their other imprints are onto something special. They're good hard working people with a unique sense of dedication and should be allowed to continue on their path to innovation.
I also understand that there are other publishing companies that have spun out of Airleaf, and I wish them success as well. What I don't understand is what appears to be an epidemic of attacks that have come out of all this, much of which is without cause and occasionally without integrity. So please remove me from any e-mail or correspondence that includes such vicious industry infighting. I personally have no time for it.
I can only suggest to everyone that they stop what appears to be this industrial cannibalism and get on with building their respective publishing businesses. The industry is fragile enough as it is. And the best solutions are attained with patience, mutual accord and trust.
I wish you all bright new horizons...
Robert Joseph Ahola
