A Little History on Me...
Hey everybody, my name’s Jason Jones. I was born in Tallahassee, FL, and grew up just south of there in a little town called Wakulla Station. It’s always fun hearing people trying to pronounce it right! I come from a family of hardworking truck drivers, and I was raised by my dad and step-mom. My parents divorced when I was three so I spent most of my childhood traveling back and forth between Georgia and Florida to spend holidays and summer breaks with one or the other. I have two older sisters, a younger brother, and a handful of stepbrothers and sisters.
I was a pretty shy and quiet kid, and never cared too much for being the center of attention. So it still amazes me that I do what I do for a living! My dad bought me my first guitar when I was 13. I got it on December 18 because I’d be spending that Christmas with my mom and sisters. I quit playing sports after that and always tried to get good grades so I wouldn’t get my guitar taken away. I spent countless hours figuring out songs on the radio by ear and trying to read music in books and magazines. Not long after learning how to play a little I was writing down words and trying to put them to music. A couple years later I put my first band together when I was fifteen in high school. Out of the three years we were together came some of my best memories from that time. There was an old house on my dad’s property that I convinced him to turn on the power so we could use it as a ‘band house’. We practiced quite a bit, played the high school talent shows and where ever else we could, and managed to have some pretty crazy parties at the old band house!
After high school I went to college at Tallahassee Community College for two years. Then I went into the nursing program at Florida State University with the hopes of someday being a nurse practitioner and owning my own practice. But as fate would have it during a summer off, I found myself in Dallas, Texas, at a talent competition with my cousin Tommy. I wasn’t really sure what to expect from the trip. I ended up taking first and second place in singing, modeling, and acting (talents I had no clue I had), and my first trip to Nashville happened just a few weeks later. Everything was pretty intimidating to me at the time, but after my visit to music city I decided that music was the reason I was put on this earth and Nashville was the place I needed to be.
So at 21 with one semester of nursing school under my belt I left college, packed up my stuff, hugged my dad and the rest of my family goodbye, and hit the road! I still miss them and everything about my hometown a lot, but Nashville has become my new home now. I have a little house and a dog named Chance, a band of amazing musicians who are also great friends now, some of the best fans ever, I get to write songs for a paycheck, and I most recently signed a record deal with Warner Bros. records in May of 2008. Everything in my life is truly a blessing and I thank God for all of it! I’ve had the pleasure of sharing the stage with some of my favorite artists and bands, as well as writing with some of the best songwriters to ever roll into town.
Most of my time is now spent in writing rooms and studios, on and off the road traveling, and up on the stages of smoky bars, casinos, fairs, and festivals across the country. We’ve been doing over 100 shows a year for the last four or five years, and I will tell you that it never gets old! And even though our tour bus (my Suburban) isn’t the most accommodating ride in the world, it does get us from point a to b and back again safely, minus the occasional blowout or fender bender. I know one thing for sure; the day we finally get to travel to every show on a bus with a driver will be a glorious one!!
I also just started recording for my first album and I can’t begin to tell you how excited I am! I have a great team of smart and talented people that I get to work with, and I can’t say ‘thank you’ enough to all of them for believing in me. Right now, that is my story in a nutshell. I hope you like my music and that I get to meet you personally at one of my shows soon! Thanks for reading…
Lots of love,
Jason
