About me:

Please share your pictures of Jonesy, so they can be added to his profile. Thanks!

Born in Indiana on August 31, 1911 and given the name Raymond Frederick Jones, but you probably remember him as "Jonesy". He enjoyed playing music on the streets of Nevada City and dressing wildly. He was a member of the Nevada City United Methodist Church and a resident at Spring Hill Manor.

Raymond Frederick "Jonesy" Jones passed away August 2004.

The spirit of Jonesy will live forever in our hearts and minds. Few people knew much about him and I hope to collect stories and pictures through this profile, so we can all know him a little better and enjoy his memory.

If you have a picture or story about Jonesy please post in the comments.

I MISS YOU JONSEY!!!

I remember the first time I saw you... when I was just a mullet sportin young lad in Junior High, wearing black Metallica t-shirts and stoned washed jeans playing licks on my Fender like Hendrix & Zeppelin... hanging out at a rocker party behind Foggy Mountain Music in good 'ol Downtown GV...

And there you were...

Talking so loud you couldn’t be ignored... wearing the craziest shit I had ever seen... some day-glow spandex and bright ass scarf made of lace with fur boots and all kinds of get up... talking this and that and entertaining the people around you who at first just thought you were CRAZY until you got em to laugh and I remember how you did it...

You sang a song, and it went like this:

"I'm a DAD!!" ...as you lifted you're right arm up and made big pincher movements with your hand...

"I'm a DAAADDD!!!" ...lifting your left arm to make pincher movements with your other hand...

…swaying your back and forth….

and then, in one coordinated surprise you made big pinchers with BOTH hands and said, FUCKING LOUDLY:

"I'M A CRAAAAW-DAAAD!!!!!!!!"

HAHAhahAHahahaHAhaha :)))

I’ve ALWAYS thought that shit was sooooo funny Jonesy!

And now my friends all know where I learn that shit from. No one ever thinks it's as funny as I did when you did it, but ever since then I have liked you man.

I miss giving you rides all over God's green earth and listening to your crazy stories.

From age 16 when I got my license through my first year of college I picked you up whenever I saw you with your thumb out in Nevada County. I made my friends sit in the back, remember that?

I don't think you really ever remembered me, but it didn't even matter because you were always the crazy funny interesting and LOUD Jonesy you always were.

I guess you died the year I moved away from Grass Valley, but your spirit lives on. I know that fo sho my friend!

Happy Birthday Jonesey!

It's a shame the NC kids wil never get to experience one of your lovely stories, or better yet, a special Jonesey song just for them.

I was lucky enough to get several such serenades, I remember you singing me Happy Birthday at six, and every year until I was 17...Even when it wasn't my birthday.

One day a friend and I came upon Jonesy looking uncharacteristically sad. But always at the ready with a peppy tune he looked at us and sang, "They call me jerky, cuz I can't get no wimminz...". What a guy...a true legend.

Jonsey, you were the King of GV/NC urban legends. I moved to norcal from OC-land as a teen and encountered you at the Herb Shop shortly after... can't specifically recall what colorful trend-setting garb you were sporting that day, but I will never forget the burn in my cheeks when you told me (16, innocently nibbling scone and sipping my cup of joe) that you could give me lessons in sex. Whoah, I did not see that coming!

In another memory, you joined us the in viewing Of Mice & Men at Sierra Cinema. You were smartly attired in a get-up reminiscent of the old West, polished with a Chicken-laying-an-egg perched on a straw hat. Man, you had style... my applause to you.

I remember one Christmas, Jonsey was dressed up like a Christmas tree. He had one this outragious costume, with lights and everything. And he was passing out twenties....and yeah, ok, it ended up that they were fake twenties...but boy I thought he was the coolest. He always had those bells that would ring when he walked =)

My parents used to have friends named Dave and Marsha. I was always told this story about this guy we used to see singing and dancing up and down the quite streets of GV and NC. I remember rumors, or perhaps truths, that my parent's friends, Dave and Marsha, brought Jonesy up here to Nevada County from Santa Cruz for a visit; the story tells that he never left. People in my Junior and High schools liked nothing more than to talk with, make fun of, or impersonate Jonesy but usually not in an insulting manner. You could always have fun with Jonesy, and wether he was really insane, or inlightened, I don't know. But, was Jonesy rich, and was he involved with the acid test in the mid-sixties? Was he really brought to this county by friends of my parent's, Dave and Marsha? Or was he simply one of the denizens of not only our town, but of our great nation? Here's to Jonesy who touched so many, in more than one way (too far?). Strange I find this man on myspace and decide to write a few words about him two years after his death.

I remember the paper dixie cup he had taped to the side of his head and the sign around his neck that said: "Put a peanut in my ear."
I wonder how many peanuts he collected?

My first conversation with Jonsey; I must have been in the 5th grade maybe, my parents, younger brother and i were eating at Toffanellis and Jonsey was sitting at a table next to our booth. He moved his chair over to our table next to me so he could join us. He asked me if i liked ice cream. I told him I did. He asked me what my favorite kind was. Mint chip I said. Then he proceeded to decribe to me a concoction of his which consisted of icecream, coffee, and booze. He told me I could put booze into virtually anything I wanted. Well Jonsey it looks like ya rubbed off on me buddy!! Cheers!

Hey everyone,

When I moved here at 12 years old, Jonesy was the first person I saw. My mom took me to Nevada City and Jonesy was standing on a street corner in his typical garb including a beat up cowboy hat with plastic spoons and forks and ladies pantyhose hanging off it. He was singing "Daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa ohhhhh" at the top of his voice on the corner of Broad and Pine Street. I didn't know what to think! Over the years, I grew to love this town, and Jonesy and always considered it a special treat when I'd see him somewhere. I miss him terribly and feel that Nevada County isn't the same without him. I hope that wherever he is, he's singing at the top of his voice, and watching over all of us.
