Be discerning with the "Emerging church".Of course it is a movement and as such contains good and bad elements.
The good (I think) is : the radicalism ,the willingness to think afresh and the boldness to challenge the status quo of the way we've always done things.
The bad (I think) is : the radicalism ,the willingness to think afresh and the boldness to challenge the status quo of the way we've always done things.
Yes you read correct and did not read a typing error! You see all those positives when applied to ecclesiology could lead to a fresh and exciting expression of church but when applied to theology could (and has) led to liberalism.Sadly this is not good news.
1.Don't allow the work of the Lord to become more important than the Lord of the work-if you are too busy to pray you are simply too busy.
2.Who pastor's YOU? A mentor or spiritual director is a MUST in ministry!
3.Beware of the deadly oxymoron of Christian celebrity-Christian ministry is symbolised by a towel not a stage
4.Chill out or you will burn out.Keep clear bounderies-even if unmarried.Always take your day off and have some non-churchy interests.
5.Get out of the bubble! Pastor's find it easy to end up in what Lawrence Singlehurst calls "ultimate sanctification:no non-Christian friends".Avoid this like the plague!
6.You are not God.Don't allow people to put you on a pedastel by being real about your fears and failures.Keep up good mates who knew you before you were "Revd Up" who will take the wazz out of you and keep your feet on the ground.
7.Be a man of the world:keep up a lively interest in current affairs, the media, news and politics-you need to relate the Gospel to your context.
8.Leaders are readers-make it your resolve to be a life long student.
9.Fat is a spiritual issue.Counter-act the sedentary life and don't develop the pastor's paunch(I've not been good at keeping this one!)
10.The greatest is love.It is better to love than to always be right.Treat all people as equals-especially the young and the elderly and they will love you back.
