When it comes to great American songwriters and entertainers the general music listening public thinks of greats as Barry Manilow, Elton John, Ray Charles to name a few, but one that has written and performed with Grammy winning consistency is Contemporary Recording artist and Brooklyn, New York’s own, Jonnie Valentine.
With just a pen and an index card in hand he wrote the song “All the Way” for a Dreamworks Recording artist who was promoting her new album in the Plaza of the Worlds Trade Center in the summer of 1996. At age thirteen, a nervous but yet ambitious young man made his way to the autographing booth to hand the lyric scribbled index card to her himself. When he handed it to her, she was honored thinking she would have found the most of amateur written lyrics. On the contrary she found a hit telling the story of the relationship of a father and daughter. Moments later she was in tears and asked the young man to sing the first few lines and he did. Within seconds multiple Grammy winning producers asked Valentine to join them for lunch. At this lunch everyone did a little more singing, laughing and just a great time. Valentine didn’t know the impression he left on them, but by the time the lunch was over everyone heard enough to ask him to step into a professional recording studio.
While in the studio, Valentine recorded some cover songs in his own style. His renditions blew both the studio band and the executives away and got them excited in what the future holds for this young star. After recording everyone was convinced that the 1996 Worlds Trade Center Summer Stage Concert Series should end with a Jonnie Valentine performance. With constant radio play for promotion, Jonnie took the stage to be greeted by seven thousand hungry Jonnie Valentine fans.
Since that day, Jonnie has been going non stop. He has been apart of two sold out east coast tours, and performing weekly throughout his high school career. Valentine has become the most sought out vocal coach in the music industry and was personally hired by some of the biggest names in Broadway performances to prepare them for their roles. With coaching two main characters from “Jersey Boys” and “The Color Purple” those clients received Tony nominations.
His songwriting has made the careers for his fellow recording artists such as Hilary Duff, Anastasia, Cher, Kelly Clarkson to name a few. With over seven hundred songs to his credit, currently thirty eight has become number one hits on the Billboard charts and seventy top ten hits recorded by other artist. He has also arranged work for another four hundred other songs and has conducted full orchestras for legends such as Tony Bennett, Englebert Humperdick, Bette Midler and long time friend Barry Manilow.
During the Clinton Administration, Valentine has been nominated for the most prestigious award, The Presidential Award for the Arts, he has also been nominated numerous times for the Johnny Mercer Memorial Award for Excellence in Songwriting and became the first person to win the award twice for a recording artist in is level of a Developmental Recording artist. He has also won numerous industry awards for his musical contributions.
In October 2003, “I’ll Be Home for Christmas” Jonnie’s first nationwide release which was all traditional Christmas music arranged by the young artist hit stores and was certified gold. Now with almost four years passing Jonnie offers “Everyday Angels” with his new all girl band The Heartaches.
This high energy show promises to be one that will not be soon forgotten offering musicianship that has audiences in awe.
