Jonny Bruce is an extraordinary and adventurous trumpet player with a truly unique identity. He has emerged onto the UK jazz scene, in recent years, through playing with the Dave Stapleton Quintet - DSQ, with who he contributes a vital role in the bands sound. He performs regularly throughout UK and Europe and has been critically acclaimed from both the Guardian and the Independent on Sunday, as well as other jazz publications, for his playing, espeically his performance on DSQ’s second album ‘The House Always Wins (2007)’.
Since graduating from the Royal Welsh College of Music and Drama in 2006, Bruce has been one of the most in demand trumpet players in a jazz context or as session player (including TV, radio and pop recordings) on the UK scene, especially in Wales. This has led him to perform with such luminaries as Lee Goodall, Ben Waghorn, Paula Gardiner, Welsh Jazz Composers Orchestra, Mark O'Connor and Huw Warren.
In 2006 Bruce formed his own sextet with which he writes and arranges for, drawing on funk, jazz and latin influences. He is currently working on his debut album due for release in 2009.
Through his involvement with DSQ and other UK groups, Bruce has earned the reputation as one of the most exciting young trumpet players to emerge onto the UK scene in recent years.
What the press say:
"A terrific trumpeter named Jonny Bruce plays with real fizz"
The Guardian
"Trumpeter Jonny Bruce - whose growls, wails and slurs wouldn’t have been out of place in 1920’s Ellington session – slots amicably into Stapleton’s wackily integrated jazz world"
The Independent on Sunday
“Jonny Bruce…this guy has some serious “Chops” he taunted and teased the listener with short phrases, playful and emotive, gradually building in intensity culminating in a crescendo of sound with impeccable intonation and tone quality”
Black Mountain Jazz
“Jonny Bruce…an intriguing player capable of producing both straightforward flaring solos and more nuanced, dynamically and texturally varied contributions”
Cheltenham Jazz Festival 2006 supporting
the Julian Siegel Trio
“Jonny Bruce displays a pick-and-mix attitude to jazz history in his gritty trumpet work. With his growls, wails and high-register playing, he seems to have leapfrogged the Miles Davis influence in favour of the virile, attacking style of the primitives. Still only 23, Bruce is a name to watch.”
