I started writing lyrics and melodies aged 12. It became my creative outlet throughout my adolescence and a place where I could channel all my ideas and crazy energy into. I began singing lessons when I was 15. I arrived in London town right after school ended to get prepared for a career in music!!! Evening and weekends were spent writing lyrics, melodies, working with collaborators, vocal coaches and producers whilst the rest of the time I did soul-destroying, mind-numbingly boring, entry level office jobs to keep things ticking over- I suppose at least I got a song out of it!!!
I like to call my music ‘smartpop.’ The songs have a strong pop sensibility but they also have brain; they won’t leave you cold and insult your intelligence. I don’t believe that pop should be a ‘dirty’ word. I never understood why music couldn’t be populist yet intelligent and credible. My songs are about specific subject matters; the messages are pretty immediate and relatable. I don’t tend to go in for the meandering metaphor. The general consensus is that not as much love, passion, hard-work or artistry goes into pop music and for the most part that's just bulls**t.
The power of music completely fascinates me; how a really great song can transcend language, social and cultural barriers. Three or four minutes of a catchy pop tune can lift you out of your reality and make you feel hopeful about the world again.
My debut EP is titled ‘Outside Office Hours’ for a number of reasons. For the last three years I’ve worked 9 to 5’s and fitted my music in around it. Most of this EP has been written and recorded around my crumby office jobs.
The songs are slightly embellished but for the most part they are autobiographical- they’re inspired by my life! And for a huge number of people, ‘Outside Office Hours’ is when life happens.
Music and life are inter-connected. Music provides liberation and escapism in the same way getting out of work does. They’re both about breaking free from the demands and constraints that this world imposes on us. ‘Outside Office Hours’ has become a metaphor for re-claiming your voice, taking control of your destiny and being emancipated from convention.
