Jon Redfern is a songwriter and musician with folk roots but diverse musical influences. Jon's songwriting style stems from the personal and acoustic tradition of John Martyn and Nick Drake and his broad musical influences range from prog and avant garde to rock and jazz and world music (Steve Reich, Steely Dan, John Coltrane and Pink Floyd).
Aged 22, Jon joined the young North Eastern band Tarras, who shortly after signed a record deal with esteemed folk label Topic Records ( the label’s first new band signing in over fifteen years). During his time with Tarras Jon made and released two well received albums and toured extensively across Europe and the U.S. Tarras shared song writing and vocal duties giving Jon a chance to find his own unique voice, and to develop his arrangement skills.
When Tarras disbanded, Jon moved between Manchester and the North East before selling up and heading to London to make his debut solo record. Jon soon teamed up with multi instrumentalist and arranger, Patrick Durkan and together they worked on the concept and arrangements for the album. "May Be Some Time” was recorded throughout 2005 and completed in early 2006, produced by engineer Ben Findlay.
An early copy of the album was sent out to select media and industry people and very soon a Label (Reveal Records), Agent (Tom Rose), Press and Radio Team (Cool Badge) were in place to work long term on Jon’s music. “May Be Some Time” is a classic slow burning album – in the sense you can get further and deeper into the writing and playing with each additional play and this is the formula which has been chosen to promote Jon’s music. Let the music find its natural place – and from early national radio sessions for stations across the network ( BBC 1, 2, 3 , 4 and 6 have all commissioned live sessions from Jon already) as people are being drawn into the sound of “May Be Some Time” they have passed the word on.
The debut album truly distils Jon's experience and skill as a musician, songwriter, arranger and vocalist. The resulting set defies easy classification and has genuine intelligence and emotional depth, which listening had the media describing MBST as “ the first truly great record of 2007” and “the best album of the year so far”.
