In the summer of 2008, Sandra Rice and Lauren Newman starred in a production of "Beehive," a muscial that features music from the '60's. When Sandra came on stage for the Janis Joplin segment of the play, the audience was literally mesmerized by her performance. Several of the audience members, who had seen Janis Joplin live, believed Sandra was channeling her spirit.
The audience that fateful night included drummer Rick Long, guitarist Richard Newman (Lauren's dad ), and bassist Wayne Daniel. The three had played music together for over 10 years in various bands, including television appearances with Venessa Marquez, backup singer for Justin Timberlake.
Rick called Rich the next morning and asked, "Do you know any good reason that we aren't putting together a Janis Joplin tribute band with that awesome singer from last night?" Of course, Rich didn't have a reason and quickly got the contact information for Sandra from his daughter Lauren.
Lauren was recruited as a backup singer for the band and brought along her friend, Ashley Stutz. Keyboard player Carl Coolbaugh, who also has a long musical history with Rich and Rick, decided he was in on the project as well. The rest, as they say, is history. Joplin: a Tribute to Janis, was born.
After listening to the demo material, if you would like information about performances send a friend request to this myspace page. If you would like to book Joplin for a show, contact Rick Long; rlong@ymail.com or Richard Newman at RichN335@verizon.net.
