My first influence was Jermaine Jackson of the Jackson five. When they first came upon the scene in the late-70's I wanted to be just like him. I was a kid just out of grade school and I wanted to play the Bass guitar and sing just like he did. But later on as I progressed with my playing, I felt and knew that there was more that I needed to learn. So a friend of mine turned me on to Stanley Clarke. And that was it. I knew that pop music wasn't all that I was geared up to learn. And after hearing Stanley play, I knew that I had to do a lot of practicing. So to the shed I went. After Stanley I started listening to Marcus Miller, Abe Laboriel, Jaco Pastorius to name a few. But if I have to say the one Bass Player that influenced me the most was Louis Johnson. It was him that really got me into the whole slapping technique.
Todays major influence to me is a young man by the name of Victor L. Wooten. Though he has chops-a-million, he is one of the most serious pocket/solo players around today, alone with Marcus Miller. But my hat is off to all of the Bass junkies out there, because if it werent for us, THE HOUSE WOULD TUMBLE. You got to have the phat bottom thang happening to survive in the LAND OF FUNK. Or ROCK, JAZZ, or C&W. Bass is the place. To Groove
