I perform with several different groups in the Western North Carolina area: My own Jazz ensemble "CENTERPIECE", featuring Dick Hull - guitar; Ben McPherron, Brandon Miller or Jim Clark on upright Bass; Mike Barlowe - Drums; Robert George - Sax; Patrick Brown - Sax; Dave Reep - Trumpet.
I also play with an Italian Mandolin Trio/Quartet called "MUSICA NOSTRA". This group features: Dick Hull - 1st Mandolin; Bob Kogut - 2nd Mandolin and Violin; Brandon Miller - Bass.
Another group with which I regularly perform is "DRIVE SOUTH" a Bluegrass outfit that features: Don Hogan - Guitar; Tony Williamson - Banjo and Pete Wallace - Mandolin.
I play guitar or upright bass and sing with all of the above groups and I'm fortunate to be surrounded by such wonderful musicians and players.
My recent solo CD release: "RHYTHM CHANGES", is an all-original Acoustic, Swing/Latin Jazz album where I'm playing rhythm guitar on all tracks and handling all of the vocal work. I also play a few guitar solo parts as well as upright bass on several tracks.
Joining me on the CD are some of the finest Acoustic Jazz Musicians in Western North Carolina... or anywhere for that matter.
Leading the charge is AARON RAMSEY, the newest member of the consummate Bluegrass band: "Mountain Heart". Playing world-class/championship caliber MANDOLIN throughout the album, AARON also played some lead guitar and even some bass ..ed tracks.
Next up is the incomparable REGGIE HARRIS playing lead guitar on two of the swingingest tunes on the album. Having toured with none other than reknowned fiddler - VASSAR CLEMENTS - Reggie Harris is everybody's favorite guitar player... a musician's musician.
Laying down an impeccable beat to keep it all together, is WES POWERS. Playing drums and percussion, Wes is currently in Nashville plying his trade and providing the groove that keeps us all tapping our feet!
Also helping on the project: ANDREW CRAWFORD (of Randy Kohrs & The Lites) plays the guitar solo on "Song For Alice"; PATRICK BROWN playing Sax on "Samba da la Isla"; BRANDON MILLER playing upright bass on "At the Station"; And last -but not least - BOB KOGUT (fiddle on "Cupid's going Crazy") & DICK HULL who plays perhaps the most tasteful guitar solo on the CD on the track "At the Station".

Sounds Like
JOSEPH HASTY & CENTERPIECE create a distinctive yet classic sound, playing a variety of swing tunes, show tunes, latin and jazz standards. The original tunes off Joseph's new release "Rhythm Changes" are a cross between a classic small combo swing band and that of an acoustic latin sound similar to that of Jobim or some of David Grisman's Dawg music. Sometimes you will be reminded of the "Hot Club" sound of Django Reinhart and Stephan Grappelli, other times it will be the Nat King Cole Trio - only without the piano. All blending to form a smooth, very listenable sound that is great for the cocktail hour or for dancers that know all of the classic moves!
JOSEPH HASTY has had extensive performing experience in many styles of music ranging from Jazz to Bluegrass in a career which has carried him to stages in America, Europe and Australia.
Living in Europe for over seven years, he first performed on street corners with various ensembles and even played with the likes of Charlie Hunter - 7 and 8 string jazz guitar master - on a couple of 'pitches'. Joseph studied jazz chord theory at the Academy of Contemporary Music in Zurich, Switzerland for a short time but credits the "Mickey Baker Jazz Guitar" book for his distinctive jazzy rhythmic guitar style. A gifted performer who also sings and plays double bass, Joseph displays talents as an arranger and composer where his swing guitar and Latin influences are realized.
A three time recipient of the "Regional Artists Grant" award presented through the North Carolina School for the Arts, Joseph has been performing with the help of some wonderful musicians to form the Jazz group: "CENTERPIECE". He also performs with an Italian Mandolin trio (MUSICA NOSTRA) and a Bluegrass Band called DRIVE SOUTH. Information on all groups and Joseph's recent solo release: "Rhythm Changes" is found opposite on the left...
