   About Josephine Bell
"I would like to step out of my heart & go walking beneath the enormous sky." - Rainer Maria Rilke

I began my self-imposed wandering almost eight years ago, when I moved from tiny Holland to London in the midst of a cold and grey January winter. Amidst the ghosts of Virginia Woolf and Sylvia Plath, in Bloomsbury, I wrote about the Boston poet Anne Sexton. Had Townes van Zandt been born a woman poet, he would have been her.

It was in London that I met Thomas Hansen, or Saint Thomas, who became my companion in life, love, and music, for many years. I moved to Berlin, and then on to the North, to Oslo. That city and everything that has happened there has engrained itself in my heart. The record that we made together just weeks before his death on 5 September 2007, called Fancy Tunes, remains unreleased. Demos can be found on our Jesus & Princess Maria myspace site.

I had the great honour of recording a song with Nashville legend Dave Cloud, called Mrs Crumb. Dave is a genius, a rare Bukowski-like shaman with a heart of gold. He is also a great friend.

Currently I am living in Budapest, the city of sirens, the city that has been called the Pearl of the Danube. I'm a fervent journal writer, walker and lyricist. And when I am not working on my PhD about the exiled Jewish writer and journalist Joseph Roth, who died in Paris in 1939, I am writing songs and recording demos in my bare and bohemian flat in the VIII district.

"I have always imagined that Paradise will be a kind of library." - Jorge Luis Borges

"There's a crack in everything - That's how the light gets in - That's how the light gets in." - Leonard Cohen

Hi Josephine,

How are you? Would you happen to know anyone who sets up shows in
Budapest? I have one person attempting to set up a show for me there in
January but am not sure if it will work out - and would love to play
there...Any help you could provide would be wonderful!

Thanks so much,

Ryland
