Josephine studied at the Guildhall school of Music and Drama with Stan Sulzman and Martin Hathaway, whilst there winning the 1999 Perrier Young Jazz Award with a quintet co-lead with trumpeter Tom Allan. She has since performed and recorded with the London Jazz Orchestra, Ronnie Scott's Vanguard Band (led by Gerard Presencer), Jamie Cullum, The Laurence Cottle Big Band, Sax Appeal, Will Young, The BBC Big Band, Matt Wates sextet, Gareth Lockrane's GrooveYard as well as a two year stint in the National Youth Jazz Orchestra.
JD5 was formed in the summer of 2006 and has one album 'Elation' already available. They were back in the studio at the beginning of this year to record a new album, 'The Brink', which will be released later in the year combined with a country-wide publicity tour. Both recordings feature the original compositions of the bandleader whose various influences include the music of Maria Schnieder, Kenny Wheeler, Walt Weiskopf and Chris Potter.
The members of Josephine's Quintet are trumpeter Robbie Robson who studied at Leeds College of Music followed by a post-graduate year at Guildhall. He was a national finalist in the Young Jazz Musician of the Year 1999, and the runner up in the Perrier Young Jazz Musician 2000. Robbie regularly works with the Matt Wates Septet, Frank Griffiths Nonet and the London Jazz Orchestra and has also played with John and Jacqui Dankworth, Jamie Cullum and JTQ. His own band 'Dog Soup' have just released their first album, 'Fragments', under the Loop Label.
Pianist and organist Ross Stanley, a fantastic young Guildhall graduate, is becoming a busy side man in his own right, playing with Jim Mullen, Gareth Lockrane, Gilad Atzmon, Renato D'aiello and Dylan Howe. Ross also came to the attention of Guy Barker recently and not only toured with Guy's Big Band but played the support slot on the Ronnie Scotts dates with his own trio.
Dave Whitford is one of the most sought after British Bass players. He has recently joined the trio of ex Sting and Wayne Shorter alumnus Jason Rebello and has albums about to be released with Christine Tobin and the Liam Noble Trio. He is also currently travelling back and forth to Hamburg to play with the German Radio Band.
Drummer Nicholas Smalley, originally from Manchester, completes the line up. He also studied at Leeds then moved down to London where he has been working steadily with many prominent jazz musicians including Phil Robson, Guy Barker, Tina May, Alan Barnes and Julian Joseph. He has played drums and ethnic percussion on a number of BBC soundtrack sessions for travel series starring Michael Palin and more recently Steven Fry. His exciting and mature playing is inspired by Jeff Ballard, Jeff Tain Watts and Brian Blade.
