Born and raised on the island of O'ahu, Hawai'i, Joshua Alo grew up as an island boy strumming the ukulele and acoustic guitar on Oahu’s rhythmic shores. His music and lyrics captivate the heart and mind with uplifting messages and a call to both global and self awareness. It is this cultural rhythm which drives Joshua to continuously create some of the most unique and intriguing sounds in roots reggae today. “…Alo’s music reaches the depths of the soul and brings a sense of tranquility appropriate for all times and seasons.” (Honolulu Star Bulletin)
Along with Hawaii’s intoxicating beauty is its contrasting stubborn economy which pushed Joshua to cling to reggae music’s revolutionary stance embracing the musical influence of Bob Marley and Steel Pulse. At the age of 17, Joshua was a self taught musician who began his journey as one of Oahu’s street and Oceanside performers, but he soon found himself without money for college and rent. Joshua then left his beloved homeland to enlist in the Air Force. He is now widely known as roots reggae's first enlisted service member who singlehandedly brought this conscious sound to and throughout the Middle East, including the frontlines of Iraq and Europe all while serving the nation abroad.
In 2007, Joshua recorded his debut album Answer Your Calling, which received high praises from even the harshest music critics and gained him increased exposure worldwide. By his efforts alone, Answer Your Calling sold over 7,000 copies around the world and spawned hit singles such as “Angel” and “Dreaming” which rode the top 10 charts in Hawaii for weeks. Internationally, Answer Your Calling went on to reach Number 2 in Brazil's Radio Reggae Trade's Top Reggae Albums of 2007 along with receiving the Roots Top Choice award by Roots Music.nl in Holland. CD Baby and iTunes also hailed this debut album as one of 2007’s top independent reggae releases.
After his military service was completed in 2008, Joshua returned to his home island and was enthusiastically received by his fans as he delivered captivating and powerful performances all over Hawaii, drawing his audience into his energy and visions. The media welcomed him as a musical hero with front page exposure in national newspapers and appearances on radio and TV shows including Hawaii’s leading news channel, KHON. Joshua, now based in Europe, is working on his highly anticipated sophomore album, Orchid Unknown, set for release in the fall. Recorded in Brussels Belgium and mixed and mastered by the legendary reggae engineer Jim Fox in Washington D.C. Orchid Unknown is an uplifting ensemble of conscious music showcasing Joshua's profound evolution in arrangements and songwriting. His latest cuts taken from the album, “KEEP” and “Hold On” are already beginning to chart on airwaves in Hawaii, Brazil, and Portugal. “…Not only can this humble Hawaiian man record simply groundbreaking original music, his on stage performances are charismatic and magical.” (Maui Times)
