POEM BY CHARLES SIMIC
EYES FASTENED WITH PINS
How much death works,
No one knows what a long
Day he puts in. The little
Wife always alone
Ironing death's laundry.
The beautiful daughters
Setting death's supper table.
The neighbors playing
Pinochle in the backyard
Or just sitting on the steps
Drinking beer. Death,
Meanwhile, in a strange
Part of town looking for
Someone with a bad cough,
But the address somehow wrong,
Even death can't figure it out
Among all the locked doors...
And the rain beginning to fall.
Long windy night ahead.
Death with not even a newspaper
To cover his head, not even
A dime to call the one pining away,
Undressing slowly, sleepily,
And stretching naked
On death's side of the bed.
About me: "Stewart's ability to be simultaneously playful and melancholy, profound and unsettling make him not only a capable poet, but another Pudding House poet the reading public should watch. If "Vintage Gray" is any indication, Stewart is and will continue to be an important figure in 21st Century American poetry."

Well Crap!!! I hate talking about myself. I’m the editor of the online magazine Big Toe Review (www.bigtoereview.com). I have two chapbooks: Ordinary Mysteries, published by White Heron Press in 2004, and Vintage Gray, forthcoming from Pudding House Press. My poems have been published or are forthcoming in Massachusetts Review, DMQ Review, Rattle, Diner, Berkshire Review, Heat City Review, and Worcester Review. I recently completed my first full-length book, Everybody Wants to be Cary Grant. I have an unhealthy obsession with Bing Crosby, Grace Kelly, and my cat.
Who I'd like to meet: People who are serious about writing. Truely serious. Professional.
Thanks man! I wish I was able to grab that photo of us from graduation when they were giving out the yearbooks. Since I missed the opportunity, I had always hoped either you or Scott ended up snatching it. Ha ha! Snatch.
Actually, I added her as a friend. I was kind of surprised when I saw the message on my bulletin board.
Hey there! I hope everything is going well for you, especially on this Memorial Day weekend. I would really like to know what you think of my poetry. It's in my blogs. Thanks!
I may be heading to the Iron Horse on Saturday to see Jerry Douglas (greatest dobro player ever). $40 but worth it. If you feel like catching a show let me know.
Hey! Thanks for the add Joshua Michael Stewart. I hope you'll be able to stop by our show February 2nd, 2008 at 8PM. We'll be playing at The Q in Worcester, MA! Stop by our page today and check it out and leave a comment!
We're pretty new to the area so we're really trying to make some ground in the area. Check us out and comment back!
Poets are the Zen masters of the writing world...Wishing you continued creativity and great adventure on the journey ahead. Thx for the friend request! Natasha Mostert, author of Season of the Witch
Thanks for the compliments and suggestions! I'm glad you're seeing improvement. I feel like I'm improving, but I hadn't got much feedback this summer, so it's kind of reassuring for me to hear that.
I'll have to experiment with cutting out those little 'you know'-type phrasings. I originally considered them a necessity to achieve the voice I was shooting for, but now that you point it out, often times I could probably cut it a little tighter and still keep the voice. Alas, your advice is practical!
I've read good things about U of M, but I think if I get an MFA, I feel like leaving Michigan for a couple years for it, just for a change of scenery (if I can get accepted wherever else; Brown or Cornell would work wonderfully, haha).
And that reminds me of something maybe you could give some insight on. I know some people say it's a bad idea to jump into an MFA right after getting your Bachelor's. (I've heard it's good to just LIVE some first.. also a break could prevent academic burnout.) Any feelings on that? I've got 2 years or so before I'd need to apply to programs, but I've lately been trying to get some direction in that way (I just read Tom Kealey's "The Creative Writing MFA Handbook" -- very informative).
Hi Joshua, thanks for befriending Hecale, hope you like the site. If we can do a link in Magazines & E-zines for Big Toe Review, drop us a note. Words directory always open for poetry/flash fiction submissions for profiling writers. All the best.
Thanks, mang. I've started reworking your theme and I'll bust it out soon. I'm thinking of renaming it "Naughty Lil Corpses" what do you think? hehe. I haven't had a chance to read the new installment on the BTR, yet but I'll let you know what I think when I do. Be groovy!
Hey. Got the chapbook. Thank you. Am saving it for the airplane to NY for BookExpo. I am the biggest slacker known to man. Still need to get you your copy of Cocktails & Confessions. You're gonna dig it. (Hopefully.)
