JAMMY WINNER, 2002 COMMUNITY SERVICE AWARD AS FOUNDER AND EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR OF PANIC FANS FOR FOOD
Joshua Stack's songwriting skills earned him the second place finish among hundreds of entries in last years annual DC singer/songwriter competition. Taking inspiration from his Shenandoah Valley-upbringing and his bluegrass-performing parents, Stack picked up a guitar at 10 and began writing songs. "I couldnt help but to play, cuz I was always around the stuff. The old guys doing those frenetic bass runs on their Martins just grabbed me."
Playing in a 3 piece at Oxford College in Georgia, Josh and his band made their stage debut at the Georgia Theater opening for David Wilcox at The Georgia Theater in April of 1995. Two weeks later they were invited back to the venerable Theater to warm up the crowd for Allgood. We were just kids who found ourselves standing in a roomful of legendary ghosts. It was both overwhelming and inspiring and drove us all to see what we could do with this thing, says Stack. While he became known as a solo performer, Stack also chose to form CubanStack, a powerful rock band for whom Stack would quickly become the principal songwriter and central creative force. The band worked successfully primarily in the East Coast mid-sized venue circuit, culminating with a memorable sold out performance at Manhattans BB King Blues Club where they shared the stage with Bernie Worrell, George Porter Jr., Dirty Dozen Brass Band and Bloodkin.
Since then, Stack has recorded two full length albums and is putting the finishing touches on two more, which should be released in conjunction with extensive touring he has planned for later this year. Stack performs frequently as a solo artist, and occasionally does duo gigs with guitarist (and CubanStack bandmate, also current member of Bloodkin) Eric Martinez CubanStack itself still gigs occasionally.
Stack is also nationally known for his tireless efforts in keeping afloat Panic Fans For Food. Stack founded this organization which has collected and donated literally tons of food and tens of thousands of dollars from the loyal Widespread Panic fan base, and facilitated getting this food to those most in need. Stacks organization received the Jammy for Community Service at the Roseland Ballroom in New York City in 2002.

Hello from your Mamas! After putting hundreds of miles on the ole trusty Subaru with a busy summer and early fall of festivals and southeastern listening rooms, racking up hundreds of sound checks, hitting countless truck stops, scenic overlooks and seedy motels and crashing on many kind people’s couches, we are delighted to share with you that we Mamas will be returning to some of our favorite local venues this coming weekend. For our Charlotte fans, we hope to see your faces at the Evening Muse this Friday evening the 14th, and the following evening, Saturday the 15th, we hope to see all of our beloved hometown fans (you!) at the Grey Eagle in Asheville where our buddies Town Mountain will warm up the stage for us. We can’t wait to step back onto our favorite home stage and share some of our new songs and stories from the road with you. And as if that were not enough, you can also look forward to our hearing our fiddle player Anna Bauman-Smith make her songwriting and singing debut with us on Saturday evening. Wahoo!
Just giving you a heads up that January looks like it is going to be a very busy month…what with recording our new album and all…That’s right, you heard us! We will be going into the studio in January to record our long-awaited second album. Look for it later in ’09 and you can be sure that we will invite you to celebrate its release with us. Other things to look forward to in January are our New Years Eve performance at the White Horse in Black Mountain, as well as our show at Jack of the Wood on Friday January 9th, which also happens to be Miss Jane’s birthday. She especially requests your presence at this show and will accept gifts in the currency of whiskey ;)
