Weird Mix of raw Country Blues and a scala of various music-styles.
Numerous concerts in Belgium through the seventies and eighties, all by himself, or in duo's, trio's ,or with his bands: STUPID PAINTERS, DE KOLLEKTIEVE ZELFMOORD, the CHINA PIG BLUES BAND.
Between 1986 and 2004: no public appearances at all.
With great antipathy against the predictable speed of new technology in everyday life, he lived as a hermit in his mansion in his own county, far from the madding crowd. There he settled his 'Museum of Ancient Strings and Things'... a large collection of self-made objects, books, drawings, paintings...
meanwhile he compiled his old and new recordings on 25 cd's ! (field- and houserecordings: no studio material)
Very recommended: Volume 20 ('Shoes'), Volume 21 ('Isolation Cell Blues'), Volume 22 ('Voyage Autour de Mes Chambres'), Volume 24 ('Rarities 2').
The music of Jos Steen is a weird blend of wilful interpretations of early Country Blues, improvised and composed music, invented Ethnic Music, acoustic soundscapes... mostly performed on cracked instruments.

Du blues belge... Le personnage Jos Steen vient du Nord du pays mais n'en est pas pour autant l'alter-ego de William Dunker. Certes Jos connaît ses classiques et a de la bouteille, mais tellement qu'il a son univers bien à lui, follement blues comme un Captain Beefheart, surréaliste comme un Belge. Son blues c'est celui de la bonne bière, il chante la mort, l'amour, la guerre et l'argent... Le blues est universel et c'est drôle. Il sera accompagné par ses comparses Zark (guitare) et Salami (basse), de 20 ans ses cadets. Véridique: la guitare de Jos Steen porte le numéro 44.
How's life as an undercover agent known as Jim Bomb (ooops, I've given away your secret identity!!). Great to see and hear you once again as I still have plenty of fun memories of gigs with you. I think I still have most of the tapes as well, after all who needs a CD when a tape will do???
