JOSUE aka UNIK, born as Josue Badet, a native son of Port-Au-Price, Haiti, a current representative of Philadelphia, PA, and a future ambassador of the R&B world.
Josue was introduced to and influenced by the world of music at an early age. Growing up in a world of constant violence, hardship, and economic instability, Josue turned to the tunes of the radio to escape his surroundings. Musiq Soulchild, Usher, R. Kelly, Sisqo, and Boys to Men were the sounds that helped Josue get through his days of struggle. With these inspirations of legendary music, Josue began to write and express his views on all issues through the stroke of his pen. At the age of 15, Josue saved up enough money to purchase his very first track recorder. “It wasn’t the most stylish or the most complex of recording devices, but it got the job done,” says Josue. He began turning his lyrics into songs by spending countless hours of the day creating melodies and recording them on his track recorder. Josue began performing these songs at popular soccer games, schools, shows, special gatherings, and at his church. He began creating his very own fan-base of supportive individuals who constantly encouraged him to keep working hard, no matter how difficult that may be.
In 1999, Josue came to the United States along with his two brothers and two sisters who were in Haiti with him. Here he got reunited with his brother Keuly, who was born in the US, his cousin Rony, and close friend Phillip. Josue wasted no time to get back to doing what he loved and did the best. Josue, Keuly, Rony, Phillip, and Reckenson, one of Jouse’s brothers, formed an a-capella group of majestic harmony called “Brothers.” Brothers was a big hit amongst the Haitian community in Philadelphia, New York, New Jersey, and Boston. They left the audience amazed and in great astonishment after every performance. They held numerous concerts and featured in many shows supporting local artists. Brothers were on there way to success and had a very prospering future. In 2005, one of the members was falsely accused of a crime by a “friend” who had her heart filled with hate and jealousy. He was arrested and was later found to be innocent of the absurd accusations. Unfortunately, because of his alien status, he was not released and was later deported. This had a great impact on the progression of Brothers. The group performed at the church where he attended to honor him. They never performed together since then.
Although the break-up was very unfortunate and affected Josue deeply, it did not stop Josue from continuing to pursue his lifelong dream of becoming a well known and respected contributor of quality music. Without the rest of Brothers to back him up, Josue began purchasing beats from local producers and started recording on his track-recorder. Josue’s unique voice, style and creativity earned him the name UNIK which clearly and respectably sets him apart from the rest.
Josue currently has a world-wide fan-base of over 50,000 known people of all ages. His music versatility ranges from love to politics to spiritual. When listening to a track by JOSUE aka UNIK, there is never a dull moment. Each note is innovative and insightfully put together to create an unforgettable masterpiece.
From growing up in the foreign traditions of a third world country, to adapting to that of the United States, the life of JOSUE aka UNIK can be described as courageous, inspirational, phenomenal and many more well deserved adjectives. in the summer 0f 2007, AMERICAN IDOL came to Philadelphia which is where JOSUE AKA UNIK currently resides.
