Interests

  • General

I have numerous interests, including: Reading * Writing short stories, poetry and songs * Beading/jewelry making * Playing piano/guitar * Traveling * Surfing to places/sites around the world * Digital photography * Photo restoration * Genealogy (7 generations back so far) * Walking/hiking * Horseback riding * Antiquing

I also enjoy politics--reading about the day's political events online, watching my favorite news channels and Comedy Central shows, doing my part in the political process, even sometimes debating a friend. That said, I don't believe in shoving my values down anyone else's throat.
    ..
  • Music

I like all kinds of music except really heavy metal--the kind with lots of screaming and no discernible melody--and rap--particularly rap that glamorizes or promotes violence. Basically, I can't identify with either music genre, but all kinds of people and music make the world go 'round.

I could list who I love (see my Friends list for a few hints), but that list would go on ad nauseum. It would be simpler to list who I don't like, but that's a negative vibe....

So just look through my friends list to see which musical artists I've selected to be my friends.

  • Movies

Love movies and the whole theater experience. My husband and I go often. There are way too many great movies to attempt to list my favs here.

  • Television

I'd like to be able to stick my nose in the air and claim that TV is too pedestrian (or that my husband and I don't ever turn it on), but that would be a big black lie. Of course we watch TV.

Some of my earliest memories involve watching first-run episodes of Star Trek (my fav), Laugh In (my mom's fav), Gunsmoke (my dad's fav), Bewitched, I Dream of Jeannie, and too many more to name. (Actually, thanks to Samantha, Jeannie and my mom, I learned at an early age that women have the power in most households. It's all about utilizing that power with such an otherworldly finesse that the men in the household believe that THEY actually had most of the ideas and made most of the decisions.)

It's also all about the right kind of mental training and conditioning. Think Pavlov. Think basics like sex, food, beer/wine, NASCAR...and maybe a little ice cream and the occasional cookie...chocolate, of course.

Now that you've forgotten all about the subject of this section, back to TV. My current favorite shows (in no particular order but most definitely in HD at 1080p) are:

    Lost * Heroes * Saving Grace * 24 * Life * The Shield * Rescue Me * My Name is Earl * The Office * Nip/Tuck * Dr. Who * Torchwood * The Simpsons * Monk * Reno 911 * The 4400 * House * Bones * Without a Trace * Battlestar Galactica * Stargate Atlantis * The Colbert Report * The Daily Show * The Dead Zone * Prison Break * Etc.

And just about anything on Animal Planet, HGTV, TLC, BBC America, Comedy Central or HBO. I also like to catch up on the day's news via CNN, Fox News, The Weather Channel, MSNBC, etc. I also enjoy the various music video, digital music channels and on-demand choices offered by our cable provider.

Shows that I loved and wish they were still on in first run: Sopranos * Deadwood * Stargate SG1 * Invasion * Alias * Carnivale * Six Feet Under * Red Dwarf * Roswell * Buffy the Vampire Slayer * Angel * The X-Files * Profiler * The Pretender * Highlander: The Series * La Femme Nikita * Lovejoy * Star Trek (all versions) * Twin Peaks * Magnum P.I. * Millennium * Ally McBeal * Murphy Brown * Andromeda * Charmed * Dark Angel * Due South * Northern Exposure * Night Court * MacGyver * The Rockford Files * NYPD Blue * Hillstreet Blues * Farscape * Quantum Leap * Sliders * Absolutely Fabulous * Cheers * Just Shoot Me * Moonlighting * Remington Steele * Seinfeld * The Adventures of Briscoe County Jr. * Etc.

  • Books

I real all kinds of fiction, literature, non-fiction and poetry, but my favorite escapism reading always involves mysteries, thrillers, sci fi novels, humorous novels and the odd well-written romance. Just a few of my favorite novelists include: Steve Berry, James Lee Burke, Lincoln Child, Michael Connelly, Patricia Cornwell, Robert Crais, Lindsay Davis, Tim Dorsey, Pete Dexter, Neil Gaiman, James W. Hall, Carl Hiassen, Tony Hillerman, Dean Koontz, Dennis Lehane, Cormac McCarthy, Christopher Moore, Robert B. Parker, T. Jefferson Parker, Ridley Pearson, Douglas Preston, James Rollins, James Twining and many many more.

I also read a bunch of print and online magazines, newspapers and blogs on a regular basis. In fact, I've been a "news hound" my entire life--even before I became a reporter. I like to know what's going on and be able to hold my own in any discussions/debates.

  • Heroes

I have two heroes: my parents. Two of the smartest and wisest people I have ever met, neither graduated from high school, let alone college.

Dad is gone now--as of August 29, 2008. He and Mom have been the best examples of how to be parents--no, how to be great human beings--that I anyone could ever hope to experience.

They taught me that with hard work and the application of some basic common sense and God-given intelligence, almost anything is possible--even for a poor Appalachian farm girl. They taught me to always do my best, be an independent thinker, be a proactive problem-solver, stand up for myself, and be a good person. They taught me to be proud of my heritage and who I am. They taught me that even the richest and most powerful people put their proverbial pants on, one leg at a time, just like everyone else.

And finally, they taught me that happiness is about family, friends, love, finding your "calling" and doing the things you enjoy most. You don't need money or possessions to be happy; you just need to look around and allow yourself to fully appreciate and savor what you already have.

    Like Mulder and Scully:

Because everything I know, I learned from:

I'd like to be able to kick butt like:

    And solve problems like:

And when I don't want to deal with crap, I'd like to be able to enjoy a solo siesta in my bottle like:

I am a . . .

Virginian. Journalist. Tropical fish assassin. Former magazine editor. Packrat. Pen collector. Creative writer. Pianist. Caffeine addict. Music lover. Drama queen removal specialist. Reader. Clown-hater. Wife. Dreamer. Songwriter. Chooser of comfort over fashion. Singer. Speed demon. Believer in quality over quantity. Storyteller. Amateur genealogist. Animal lover. Feline mom. I can be . . .

Sexy. Bitchy. Impulsive. Shy. Quiet. Mouthy. Opinionated. Witty. Grouchy. Happy. Sleepy...no, wait! (That's a different children's story.) I can be anything I WANT to be.

There are zero kids and three female cats in our household. The girls and I work hard to keep a mind-controlling "eau de estrogen" in the air. My poor hubby doesn't stand a chance. One cute look or purr and....you get the picture. And speaking of pictures, check out our "kids" by clicking on my pics. (I can't believe I'm now one of those people who have written about their cats on a Web page. I shall add several strokes to tonight's self-flogging exercise.)

This is where I grew up--Scott County, Virginia--home of the famous Carter Family. My ancestors first settled there prior to 1820, making them true pioneers living along the Wilderness Road blazed by Daniel Boone. It is an area rich with mountain traditions and music. It is still home even though I have not lived there in over 20 years.

Don't rub it in! I stayed up way late last night reading and my idoit neighbors started major construction at 7:30 this morning using a nail gun with a .22 round. They shot nails until 9, then became so quiet. I'm plotting their doom.
