The dawning of what has become the alternative/punk rock band, Joy Thief, goes back six years to a high school talent show in rural Holmen, WI, when Nate, Jeff, and Kelly decided to form The Graduates. It was then that a shared passion for making music was discovered. They played and practiced together throughout college, adding music to their catalogue and eventually another musician to the lineup.
Jeff's brother, Joe, joined the band, and the group began playing shows and collaborating on many songs. In an unfortunate turn of events, Joe had to leave the band to answer a call from the National Guard, but before leaving he referred Jared to the group. Jared brought with him a unique stlye and prior experience having played in the bands My Good Wife Jane and Drunk Before Noon.
As with the lineup changes the group also went through name changes. For awhile they were known as the Vermicious Kinids and then as the Bad Habits. The group progressed yet something was missing. With two guitarists, Nate and Jared; a drummer, Jeff; and Kelly on the bass, the last spot to fill was a lead singer. The group posted signs and eventually received a call from Nic who found the ad after his motorcycle broke down outside of a local guitar shop.
After a chance to watch a show and see what the Bad Habits had to offer, Nic auditioned and the group loved what they heard a strong voice from a passionate performer. With the final piece in place, it was time for one last unifying name change.
Joy Thief features the combined talents of Nic, Jared, Kelly, Jeff, and Nate - 5 guys with different musical interests and styles, each bringing something special to the mix. You'll hear the drone of alternative rock and the spirit and energy of a punk show combined with their own unique sound. Joy Thief creates relatable songs about life, its effects and changes, as well as songs for letting loose and having fun.
Their debut album, Buried Under Dreams, is now available. The members of Joy Thief are overjoyed to have the opportunity to create music that a wide variety of listeners are sure to enjoy. They may be buried under dreams, but they are destined to leave a lasting impression with their music.
In December of 2006 Kelly decided to part from the band for personal reasons. We searched for a bass player and auditioned a few potential candidates for the Job. We have recently added a new member, Steve, to the band to replace Kelly. Steve has been very quick to learn all of the bass lines and offer new insight to the music of Joy Thief. Come check out a show and meet Steve for yourself and enjoy a rockin show. New pics to come soon.
