So say “I FUCKING AM - WE FUCKING ARE” spend everything… and…Rock and Roll
Her Japan fan (or Jay-pan fan as she pronounced it) was what June Carter-Cash told husband Johnny she’d be waiting behind when he finds her in Jackson, the place they both plan to flee to when their relationship crumbles, as told in the song of that city’s name.
This is a new Brisbane band, J-PAN FAN. The femme who fronts the FAN carries the better balance between class and street and has a unique vocal instrument that channels delicate fragility and primal feminine mania. Emma Carton comes from a long history of performing as solo artist and brings three talented musicians into the mix. Jonny Ryan has played drums across Europe with live sensation Van Lustbader. Bassist Rob Crook has cut his teeth with intricate hard rock group Manual and guitarist Pete Heywood made noise with Bulldozer in the 90s.
J-Pan Fan got together after Emma was asked to do a solo show - she was sick of being on stage alone and needed friends to party with so J-Pan Fan was formed. Since their creation in May 2008 J-Pan Fan have played many shows including the Massive Sounds Festival, supported Final Days of Autumn at The Zoo, 4ZzZ Side Show Alley and Fete de la Musique.
TIME OFF REVIEW 06.12.08
Final Days of Autumn, The Smokestack Orchestra, J-Pan Fan
Resplendent in leopard print cocktail dress and donning a classy looking white Gretch geetar, Emma Carton leads her band J-Pan Fan (a quote from June Carter Cash on the classic Cash duet ‘Jackson’) through a well crafted set of rock/pop tunes. Carton has a great vocal quality and stage presence that could be something akin to what PJ Harvey might be like if ever found bearing a sunny disposition. This bouncy guitar pop is well honed but displays enough grit to make it interesting. J-Pan Fan deliver with the tightness of a band of longer tenure than the recently formed four-piece and it will be great to see what they bring in the future.
