Most of what you hear on this page will be my solo material, occasionally with other musicians I used to play with on bass and percussion. I'll put new stuff in here as often as I'm able. There's some covers over on The Bus Drivers page too.
Influences
The Black Crowes, first and foremost. But I am incredibly influenced and impacted by two legends, Johnny Cash & Waylon Jennings. Most everyone knows who Johnny Cash is, and you should, but if you don't know Waylon, you'll never know what attitude in music is all about.
I'm also incredibly and indelibly influenced by a revolving cast of musical characters including, but by no means limited to: The Marshall Tucker Band, Ryan Adams (with or without The Cardinals), The Allman Brothers Band, Willie Nelson, Pearl Jam, Edwin McCain, Wilco, J.J. Cale, and John Mellencamp, in no particular order.
I also like hair metal. Yeah, I said it. I grew up with it and it'll always have a firm place in my iPod. White Lion was the first band to get me into guitar, even though I have yet to learn a single note of one of their songs. There's still time though...
Sounds Like
Myself, hopefully. Too often these days new acts are "inspired", either intrinsically or extrinsically, to become carbon copies of other artists who have already made it. No matter how tempting it might be, I want to make my own music and my own sound. I will always owe a debt to my influences and idols, but I hope that my music will always be just that.
I sing and play guitar and love doing both. I also play a (very) little bass. I like to write songs, though I don't get to play them out much because originals don't pay the bills 'round here. I am lucky to be a part of what I think is a great band called The Bus Drivers. Check us out - the link's over there somewhere, and we have a website at www.busdriversband.com. We play what I think is a great mix of classic good ol' fashioned rock music, and I think we play it very well. All of the other musicians involved in that project are incredible players. I also sing in a Southern Rock tribute act called The Southern Comfort Band, using the "stage name" J.R. Jennings. It's a tribute to two of my favorites, Johnny (J.R.) Cash and Waylon Jennings. You can find out all about that band here on Myspace as well as at www.southerncomfortrock.com. It's a helluva show. I do like to write and record my own music as well. I will continue to do so as long as I am able. Basically I feel like I have something to say. I hope people will want to listen. We'll see.
