1) Art in Science | Science in Art
Science Becomes Art in Gallery of Pieces Submitted by Researchers and Artists from the University of Colorado

In the fall of 2006, J.J. Cohen, professor of immunology, and Helen Macfarlane, medical illustrator, sent out a call for entries to the University of Colorado community - a community of thousands of staff and faculty, as well as tens of thousands of students across three universities. Scientists were asked to submit images they had made as part of their everyday work that could be considered art. Artists whose images illustrated or offered insights into scientific principles were also asked to take part. Of the hundreds of pieces submitted, 30 were selected by a jury to be printed in large format and hung in a traveling show which has been circulating in Colorado. It will be on display with OpticalReverb at Phantom Canyon Brewing Company, 2 East Pikes Peak Avenue in Colorado Springs until October, before moving to the New York Hall of Science next February.

"Art and science are often considered to be opposite extremes, with very little in common, hardly any communication, and sometimes antagonism," said Cohen. "But there is a growing movement among artists to not just use the latest technology like lasers and computer fabrication, but to illustrate scientific principles in their art. And when scientists make images of the world at scales from the atomic to the cosmic, some of these images are not just conceptually fascinating but visually stunning. We solicited both sorts of works from faculty, staff, and students at CU and its affiliates and we got images that were so much more than we expected - pieces that were incredibly creative and beautiful."

The exhibit showcases the extraordinary talents and range of scientists and artists in Colorado, where four of the 20 highest concentrations of science and technology workers in the country are located. The works were submitted online as electronic files and sent, with the entrants' names removed for impartiality, to a panel of judges including faculty, staff, and students from all CU locations, the DenverMuseum of Nature & Science, University of Arizona, and JohnsHopkinsUniversity.

"The very high quality of the hundreds of submissions made the choice difficult and the show's size was doubled online to accommodate more superb images," said Macfarlane. "People can view the exhibit at http://artsci.uchsc.edu/ although we think that the gallery exhibition is the best way to really appreciate the impact of these works."

I read the first nine chapters of Faction so far and they are so well written Jason. Is it all true? The title keeps me questioning. The only criticism I could offer right now is maybe to think about a different title and for your sake I hope certain people don't pick up a copy.
So about tonight=fireworks and ice-cream?

You work too much, Spanky. I need to see you more than once a week to feel satisfied. A woman has needs don't you know.
The Phantom looks great by the way. Your new concept is such a brilliant idea.
Don't forget to hold back a copy of the book.

Hi J, sugar plum,
Didn't hear from you today. You promised!
Heather who lives down the street from you said that she saw you cooking at The Pantry Garden up there last night. What did you do, get a third job?
I did read the K.C. article online about your new gallery in yesterdays edition of the Star. Wow! You are working with some really amazing people.
Take it easy now? Don't wear yourself out.
And call me or I'll moan and groan until I get my way.
