Trumpeter J.Q. Whitcomb was born and raised in Santa Fe, New Mexico, USA, where he gained extensive early experience playing a variety of musical genres including reggae, funk, classical, ska, and jazz. He studied Jazz Trumpet with Kenny Davis and Marcus Belgrave at Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio. J.Q. has lived and worked as a musician in Shanghai for over three years now, and has appreciated watching and participating in the development and expansion of the scene here during that time. Having played contract gigs, taking on private trumpet students, as well as freelancing in all manner of venues and capacities, he is committed to continue helping the quality of jazz continue to increase in China, particularly in Shanghai. His latest project since losing a big contract gig is a website about the Shanghai jazz scene at www.shanghaijazzscene.com/blog.
hi JQ, i just watched the trumpet special edition of MORE THAN JAZZ done by my colleague Zhang Dong, and i feel so happy and excited at what i hear and see in this edition, especially because of the interviews. the music's touching, yet it's even better to get to know what others' feel, what have touched them. it is not easy to describe my feelings now, so i just come and send you my best wishes.
Hey JQ, Hope all is well in Shanghai! We will b coming there in a couple of weeks- hope to see you then. Are you going to play somewhere on the last week of Sept? Would be cool to jam and stuff.. Take care, Pekka
Hi JQ, I'll be back on May 24th to stay for a good spell, this time in Shanghai and not exiled in Hangzhou (actually I like it there too). My phone may not be the same, so I'll let you know when I know. best regards, Eddy
