JR came to Nashville in 2003 with a head full of voices and a notebook full of songs. It became apparent that the best way to get his songs out there was to form a band, and the "Roadkill Choir" was born. According to JR: "We aim to exceed your lowest expectations....and sometimes we succeed!" When you hear their love ballads "You're Too Ugly to be Cheatin on Me" and "I'm Drinkin You Beautiful" it doesn't take long to figure out that this is no ordinary country band. "I think today's county is missing out on the humor that artists like Jerry Reed, CW McCall, and even Jim Croce recorded years ago." Still, JR is glad that humor is getting some air time on country radio as evidenced by a string of hits by Brad Paisley.
JR will tell you he is fully capable of writing a sensible love song, he just prefers not to. Always looking toward the lighter side of music, his original songs are infused with wit and humor and (only sometimes) a bit of truth! JR and the RKC have appeared at venues such as the legendary Ryman Auditorium, The Bluebird Cafe, The Ford Theater at the Country Music Hall of Fame, Tootsies Orchid Lounge, the Von Braun Center, and various corporate events and parties. They have had the privilege of opening up for Ray Price, Bobby Bare, Bryan White, Daryle Singletary, Catherine Britt, and Linda Davis.
JR and the RKC won the first annual WSM 650 AM Tootsies to the Ryman Battle of the Bands competition held in Nashville. They were selected as one 16 finalists from a pool of over 1,000 entries. They emerged victorious and had the honor of opening for Ray Price at the historic Ryman Auditorium.
