An infusion of vintage 70's and 80's soul in the vein of Stevie wonder, Michael Jackson, Prince, and Sade..... 90's Acid Jazz/British Soul (D-Influence, Omar, Jhelisa, vintage Jamiroquai, and Carleen Anderson..... 21st century nu-soul (D'Angelo, Erykah Badu, Jill Scott, and Lewis Taylor over J-Dilla styled drums)
Hailing from Chicago, Illinois comes an avid student of soul music raised on a healthy diet of funk, jazz, black rock, hip-hop, house, and of course rhythm & blues. JROD INDIGO is a genuine soul singer/songwriter/producer who has his goals set on giving the mundane and predictable trends of modern day R&B a much needed facelift. There are no boundaries set for this particular artist and his latest recording (Infectious) proves to be just the case. Prince, Michael Jackson, Stevie Wonder, Chaka Khan, and Marvin Gaye all comes to mind when bearing witness to the soulful sounds of JROD INDIGO. JROD moved to Atlanta, Georgia by the age of 9 and during the 15 years of his youth spent in the south, he completely immersed himself in the arts. He also attended school in Atlanta, GA with such luminaries as the Goodie Mob, 1/3 of the production trio "Organized Noize" (Outkast producers on their first offerings), Chilli (TLC) and the one and only Mr. Jonathan Smtih - better known to the world as 'Lil Jon; as well as the BME crew (Rob, Vince, and Searcy). With all of the transitions that black music was going through during that time throughout the 80's and the early 90's, JROD made it a point to keep his ear nourished with organic sounds that artists such as Prince, Sade, Terrence Trent D'Arby, Tony, Tone, Toni, Fishbone, A Tribe Called Quest, Jamiroquai, Meshell Ndegeocello, and a host of others who sonically refused to play the conformity game of commercial rap and overly produced r&b that relies solely on technology moreso than real musicianship and intricate songwriting. The other half of the 90's saw JROD heading out west to Seattle for a brief stint absorbing the sounds of classic rock and underground hip-hop. A move in the spring of '99 to the Bay Area saw JROD sharpening his writing skills and gradually blending in with the long dormant funk and soul scene with the hopes of resurrecting it. The basis of JROD INDIGO's sound starts with live drums, bass, guitar, and keyboards (fender rhodes, piano, organ, and vintage synths). JROD has shared the stage with the likes of Amel Larrieux, Martin Luther, The Perceptionists, The Coup, Dead Prez, cousin/lifelong best friend "CHALI2NA" and hopes to continue building with his fellow peers in creating a much needed movement within the industry. With nu-school soul artists such as D'Angelo, Bilal, Van Hunt, Erykah Badu, and Nikka Costa kicking the musical floodgates wide open, JROD is clearly on a mission to keep those doors open with his brand of organic soul music.
