  • Heroes

    I don't have one specific hero. Anyone who has a dream, and pursues that dream is a hero of mine. My mother, for the daily obstacles she was forced to conquer everyday. She was one of the strongest (emotionally, mentally, and physically) people in the world. I will never forget her. I love her to death, and I appreciate her teaching me what love is, and what a family is suppose to be. My sister, for inspiring me everyday. Barack Obama. History in the making, and proving that I can be whatever I want to be. Mark Staley for all that he has done for me, and being living proof that everything happens for a reason. Every person I have marched or performed with, especially my Thunder brothers and sisters, along with my CV Marching Band family. Having the opportunity to stand beside all of you has played such an important role in my life, and I thank all of you for the memories. Every person associated with Mt. Spokane High School and for them allowing me the opportunity to pursue my passion and to be creative.

About me:

My name is James, I am completing my Bachelors degree at EWU. Next June I will be transferring to Whitworth to complete my Masters in teaching degree....and then the world better watch out, because I will be turned loose. I work at Mt. Spokane High School as the Visual Designer for the marching band, it has proven to be one of the most rewarding, an personally fulfilling experiences I have ever had. I also serve as a visual designer for Shadle Park High School, and a visual technician for The Spokane Thunder Drum and Bugle Corps. I am blessed to have so many wonderful friends. I truly feel lucky every day that I have so many important people in my life. I was adopted, into a Caucasian family along with my brother and sister. NO, we are not blood related, and we were not adopted at the same time. One day I fully intend on meeting my biological parents, when the timing is right. I currently work at the airport, in the retail stores. In my spare time.....which is limited, I enjoy hanging with my friends, going to movies, and anything else that normal people do. I have never been good at writing these types of things, so if you want to know anything else, just ask. This year has proven to be one of the most challenging years as I lost my mother to diabetes this pat summer. The whole experience has taught me a lot, and has given me a much better appreciation on life, and living for the moment. I now dedicate my life to making my mom proud. I love her, and will make her proud! (Debra Layman July 26, 1955 - August 26, 2008.)

"If it looks good, you'll see it
If it sounds good, you'll hear it
If it's marketed right, you'll buy it
But, if it's real.....you'll feel it."
- Kid Rock

"Whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest
whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure
whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report;
if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things"

"Just when the caterpillar thought the world was over, it became a butterfly."

"There are those who walk the path, then there are those who choose it."

"The Road Not Taken"
Two Roads diverged in a yellow wood
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth;

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same,

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I-
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

- Robert Frost

Legacy of an Adopted Child

Once there were two women who never knew each other. One you do not remember, the other you call Mother.

Two different lives shaped to make you one.
One became your guiding star, the other became your sun.

The first one gave you life, and the second taught you to live it. The first gave you a need for love. The second was there to give it.

One gave you a nationality. The other gave you a name. One gave you a talent. The other gave you aim.

One gave you emotions. The other calmed your fears. One saw your first sweet smile. The other dried your tears.

One sought for you a home that she could not provide. The other prayed for a child and her hope was not denied.

And now you ask me, through your tears, the age-old question unanswered through the years.
Heredity or environment, which are you a product of?

Neither, my darling. Neither. Just two different kinds of Love.

The Story of the Starfish

Once a man was walking along a beach. The sun was shining and it was a beautiful day. Off in the distance he could see a person going back and forth between the surf's edge and and the beach. Back and forth this person went. As the man approached he could see that there were hundreds of starfish stranded on the sand as the result of the natural action of the tide.

The man was stuck by the the apparent futility of the task. There were far too many starfish. Many of them were sure to perish. As he approached the person continued the task of picking up starfish one by one and throwing them into the surf.
As he came up to the person he said, "You must be crazy. There are thousands of miles of beach covered with starfish. You can't possibly make a difference." The person looked at the man. He then stooped down and pick up one more starfish and threw it back into the ocean. He turned back to the man and said, "It sure made a difference to that one!"

    May today be a blessed Sunday and the week that lies ahead be an amazing one. May the dreams come true you have dreamt, the successes happen that you have worked hard for, and the laughter fill your heart as you deserve.

    Today I wish for you a day of knowing you are appreciated.

    I am thankful to call you my friend, thankful to have you in my life and on this journey of mine.
