All of the above ,through the heart , soul & voice of James Slater
I have been playing forever it seems and my style reflects all of the
influences I've been exposed to.
My first love is singing and especially harmony, which I put to good use in singing with various people. Cathy Judge a fine singer songwriter, Nicki Davey who has a true americana voice & style, Nicki parkinson who can sing anything & is a fine guitarist. I was a member of the “nu-country” outfit “High Lonesome” and with band partner Heather Bristow produced bluegrass ballad material.
The jazz crooners of the late 40’s and 50’s have always had a place in my
“musical heart” it's there in my vocal style.
I have a strong link with soul music including the gospel style which I adore,
Otis Redding, Steve Cropper, Aretha Wow.
When it comes to instumentation I have some fine friends, John Francis who plays steel guitar, mandolin as well as flat top, & is a fine arranger,Charly Dunlap who plays trumpet & square neck dobro & enjoys strong black coffee just like me, also Martin Froud who plays square neck as well & can accompany any style with his playing. it's always a pleasure making music with these guys.
I like to just play guitar and take a back seat, & what better way than to accompany the music of Mike Adrian a great writer.
My song writing has produced an eclectic mix of songs which further showcase my love of all styles. The platform for most of my writing is firmly in the “singer / songwriter” mode . Strong influences here being Jackson Browne ,James Taylor,Dan Penn, Rod Picott, jesse Sykes, & of course Lennon & McCartney the list is endless really.
I play all over the UK in clubs and festivals. Spain and France have also been an experiance. Paris in particular is a favourite “gig”. I play the USA regular, one trip was through the Mississippi delta via New Orleans and Memphis to witness first hand , the might of this areas music and it’s global effect on most musical styles.
You can therefore expect a mix of styles in my shows, like a good cocktail I like to think, with just a dash of the unexpected
