j sprang was born in jacksonville, fl where he began piano lessons at the age of 5. he didn't pick up the guitar till his senior year of high school and he learned how to play it by sitting in his college dorm room jamming to dave matthews and tim reynolds. he wrote his first song in december of that year and hasn't stopped.
"[song-writing] comes in waves for me. i don't write for a long time and then all of sudden i've got 5 songs in 1 week. i just write them when the come to me."
growing up he listened to many vocal groups but boyz 2 men was his favorite and you can see it in his very smooth melodies. his musical tastes are very eclectic, drawing from pop singers like justin timberlake, folk singer/songwriters ray lamontagne and damien rice, rock/rap group linkin park, acoustic rock group dave matthews band, and new rock group the killerz.
"i am constantly trying to widen my musical knowledge by listening to anything and everything. i find beauty in all creativity."
recently, a friend told him about a music production program called ableton live that is used for creating music for any situation. specifically, a lot of solo acts are using it to create tracks with other instruments to give them a fuller, more energetic, and unique sound.
"with the recent songs i've written, i have to keep it my mind, 'what kind of beat would be sweet with this?' or 'ooo, strings would sound awesome right here! it totally forces me to get out of my comfort zone of just playing the instruments i know, and thinking like a violinist, or a lead guitar, or a sitar and accordion."
