About the Victoria Lucas:
"...dang if we're not impressed with the Victoria Lucas' new work. Replete with horns, interlocking vocals and a beautiful drone, it conjures warm memories of Brian Eno's pop albums, the Talking Heads and even bits of country-pop. We're eager to hear more." (Time Out NY, November 2004).
Solo work has been called "Baroque No-Wave Country".
Juan is a New York City-based artist and musician. Since 2000 he has been a principle songwriter and player in NYC art-punk band the Victoria Lucas, called one of New York's three best new bands (John Hopkins Newsletter, see press). In 2004 the GRIM record was conceptualized as a multi-media project dealing with folklore idioms. Recording for the musical side of the project began that summer, featuring a stellar cast of New York musicians as backing. GRIM concerns itself not only with folklore in the fairy-tale sense, but also the mythologizing of every-day actions in a modern context. The project is a love letter to the continuing relevance of folk traditions and beliefs. Artwork inspired by and relevant to GRIM make up the "TELLING STORIES" art exhibition, which will debut late in 2005 in New York, with a possible tour of art galleries in Boston, Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, and Chicago to follow (as well as potential further stops in other major cities of the North East). The GRIM album acts as soundtrack to the art exhibit, accompanied with other field recordings and story testimonials.
