Brett and Elizabeth Cline play beautifully and simply. And as Juanita and the Rabbit, this San Francisco duo somehow give beautiful and simple an ominous air, a dark bravado.
Maybe it's the darker and deeper sonic limits of bass and drum that pump a little noir into the funshine. And maybe it's the uncluttered approach to its bluesy, garage-y repertoire that'll hook you immediately.
I mean, c'mon, the band even covers Motorhead's "Orgasmatron" (Lemmy's best lyrical outing, if you don't include "Ace Of Spades"). Juanita and the Rabbit cuts out the fat but leaves the grease. It's got balls and you're gonna have one too.

INTERVIEW IN THE SPOKANE INLANDER 8/13/09
When married couples everywhere were buying minivans, San Francisco’s Juanita and the Rabbit bought a band van and hit the road. by: Leah Sottile
Somewhere on the Black Rock desert, it began. It was 1999, Burning Man. Two creative people met, fell in love, went with their hearts and eloped three days later. And, eventually, they started a band.
Many years after they said “I do” and more than a dozen bands later, Brett and Elizabeth Cline realized that the creative project that they wanted in their lives was right in front of them. In their bed, their living room. Their band was already in their life, living under their roof.
Elizabeth and Brett became Juanita and the Rabbit. A platinum silver drum kit and a six string bass. They wanted to make fun music, maybe something people could dance to a little. Just stuff that could rock without worrying about it.
“I feel like it started off a little bit sweeter and a little bit loving. And as we started playing longer, it got heavier,” Elizabeth says.
They started playing what came naturally, letting notes fall where they pleased. And when they stopped being so sweet, what emerged was simple, blues-based rock. It was just enough metal to attract a heavy crowd, but not so metal that it might deter a larger audience.
“A lot of the songs on this newer album. They are about death and breaking up. We have this great, loving relationship, but it didn’t really come through on this last album,” he says. “We’d be playing in these bars and these bachelorette parties would be going on and we’re singing about death and breaking up and we had to have this disclaimer at the end that was like, ‘Hey bachelorettes, we’re totally pro-marriage!’”
At first they called it “punky love rock.” Then they started labeling it on their MySpace page as “post-punk/blues/metal.” That changed fast to “big-beat/blues/metal.” They’re still not sure if that fits — but they hate not being able to give people an appropriate description.
Juanita and the Rabbit is no White Stripes. No Jucifer. No She & Him. Sure, they’re a husband-and-wife duo — but comparisons end there. JATR is simplistic but hardly simple-minded. It’s garage punk, heavy blues and easy metal. It’s Motorhead and Beastie Boys covers.
It’s two dogs and two people who stop their van along the highways to play the music that comes easiest to them.
