  • Bio

name: Juan van Emmerloot date of birth: November 12, 1965 native country: the Netherlands nationality: Dutch (roots: Indonesian, Armenian, Chinese, Dutch) main instrument: drums and percussion secondary instruments: guitar, bass musical diversity: performer, composer, drum teacher/coach Biography: Juan started playing drums at the age of 10. For at least 8 years he seriously took lessons on the drum set and classical percussion from drum a Dutch teacher called Marius Spikmans. His first band he joined and played on stage with was at the age of 13 years. He continued studying music in school until the age of 17. The next step he took was intensive musical training at the Rotterdam Conservatory in the Netherlands. As a professional session drummer, Juan played together with quite a number of artists, including the Dutch artists Kaz Lux (Brain Box), Julya Lo'Ko and Robby Valentine. His passion for touring and meeting musicians from other countries, turned him into an international session-player. From 1993 he played on stage with various guitar players and singers such as: Mick Moody & Bernie Marsden (White Snake), Walter Trout (John Mayal Band), Poppa Chubby, Omar Dykes (Omar & The Howlers) In the years following, Juan performed on tour in Europe with some of the world's greatest guitarists: Snowy White (Pink Floyd, Thin Lizzy), Mick Rogers (Manfred Man's Earthband), Pat Travers, Steve Lukather (Toto). Many of his dreams came out during this period: he toured through Japan with artists Valentine and Valensia, went on a Californian tour with acoustic guitarist Peppino D'Agostin and with world class guitar player Steve Lukather he played on two tours through Europe. altogether they did 22 shows! He performed in an eight-concert tour with Walter Trout in Holland, as part of a tribute to Jimi Hendrix and last but certainly not least he played on many tours with the living legend guitar player Snowy White! Although Juan's music is influenced by funk, jazz and Latin, his way of playing has turned into a strong grooving rock-based style, combined with percussion flavored arrangements. In the past 5 years Juan chose to be a member of the Stef Burns Group (SBG) and for the last 5 years they've been touring and playing a lot in Italy. "I really love to work and travel with this guy and his music; absolutely one of my favorite guitar heroes of today's rock music scene!!" Having met acoustic guitarist Peppino D'Agostino (USA) and Stef Burns (USA), it started a new creative and exciting challenge for Juan. Working with both Peppino and Stef meant: "freedom to play more than just drums"; by using even more dynamics and more colorful sounds. For these concerts on their tours in Italy, Juan designed a special stage set-up that continues to serve his acoustic adventures and his outstanding creative imagination. Because of his passion for creative sounds and innovation, he is now working several years on new tools and instruments with the company called: "Albrando". With the first product called "SMAX" they've hit the market in co-operation with the best stick-brand ever: PRO MARK Time moves on....Juan: "and so I got a chance to play a couple of concerts with a new artist (singer composer) from the Netherlands called WAYLON. An absolutely well talented performer with a fantastic voice and a great guy to work with! I had the honor to step in his band for 5 concerts of which one of them was at the North Sea Jazz Festival. I always wanted to play there, so this was a more than pleasant occasion!" Teaching: Besides being a performer, Juan teaches for more than 17 years! In 1992 he started his private drum school and for years he taught to more than 45 students on a weekly base. In 1998 he started to do clinics and workshops in The Netherlands on a low profile base. Since 2000 he teaches at the Conservatorium at Rotterdam (now known as "CODARTS"), to teach well-talented students from all over Europe of which many of them have become excellent international artists! Today he is working close together with Dutch drummer named Hans Eijkenaar, who has the reputation like Juan himself to ONLY deliver the BEST QUALITY on every front in the music business. I'm sure that any teaching project in which he is involved will be well worth checking out. I hope very much that he and I will continue playing together for many years to come, as he is, for me, a very special player and a great guy to work with on all levels." Snowy White, UK (Snowy White and the flames) **** "Juan Van Emmerloot is an awesome drummer and a groove master. Chops, taste, time..its all there and he is a great guy to have a few beers with. I recommend him at the highest level. We have played together many times and I look forward to playing with him again soon." Steve Lukather, USA (Toto) **** "When I first met Juan on a Snowy White album session, I thought to myself, "Uh-oh, this guy is the real deal. No fancy kids stuff from this Drummer." Working with Juan is so professional, it just makes the art of music-making supremely exciting and makes me stay on my toes as a musician, cause if you get lazy, Juan will kick you up the ass, and let you know when you are 'letting the side down'." John 'Rabbit' Bundrick, UK (Keyboardist for "the Who") **** "Juan is one of the tastiest and grooviest drummers I have ever worked with. His light yet solid touch brings life and soul to the groove, he's a pleasure to work with and he's a great guy too!" Curtis Schwartz, UK (producer) **** "Juan has a very special, nearly spiritualistic way of getting out every one's creativity and pushing it further and further. But the most important thing to me is that I always leave his class with a whole bunch of ideas, inspiration and a smile on my face." Jan Pohl, Hannover, Germany (Drummer & songwriter "Monokay") **** "I have the privilege of knowing Juan for a few years now, and it's quite an honour. You won't find many inspiring, passionate, honest, warm and true people like him in the world today. Combine that with his tremendous musical abilities as a drummer and composer, and you've got one hell of an artist!" Ariën van Wesenbeek, The Netherlands (drummer of "God Dethroned") ****
